The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

The preseason AP Top 25 basketball poll is out, and West Virginia checks in at No. 13 to start the season. It’s the 55th consecutive week the Mountaineers have appeared in the poll, which is one shy of the program record set between 1956 and 1960. Below is the full poll and below that is my ballot. It’s my first time voting in any AP poll, so I’m sure I messed up something somewhere.

Here’s the audio from Dana Holgorsen’s portion of the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference this morning. I’ll have more from this and the rest of the league call in a Big 12 notebook online this evening and in print tomorrow morning.

Working on a not great WiFi hotspot here in the Des Moines airport as I trek back to Charleston, so this will be short. Here are WVU offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, defensive coordinator Tony Gibson and receiver David Sills in their own words on what happened in the Mountaineers’ 30-14 loss at Iowa State on Saturday. Worth noting: The AP poll came out about an hour ago and West Virginia dropped from No. 6 to No. 13.

That was a rough one. I’ll have more as we get late into the night from Iowa, but here is a short video of WVU football coach Dana Holgorsen on the Mountaineers’ first loss of the season.

It’s a gorgeous evening for football here in Iowa.

A few notes here to get everyone set for No. 6 West Virginia’s game here in Ames against Iowa State tonight.

  • All-American running back David Montgomery missed last week’s game for ISU, but is listed as a starter today.
  • WVU lists four running backs — Leddie Brown, Kennedy McKoy, Martell Pettaway and Alec Sinkfield — as possible starters, which is in line with how the Mountaineers have used the back this season. Whoever ends up being the starter, expect to see the others on the field as well. If Sinkfield gets in the game, it’ll be his first action since a September win against Youngstown State in Morgantown.
  • Tonight’s game will be the first start for Iowa State freshman quarterback Brock Purdy.
  • Your offensive line starters for WVU are: LT – Cajuste; LG – Josh Sills; C – Matt Jones; RG – Chase Behrndt OR Joe Brown; RT – Colton McKivitz.
  • The wind is whipping pretty hard here right now from my right to left toward the open end of Jack Trice Stadium.

Here are the rest of the listed starters for both teams:

My usual routine for this post is to do it in the hotel room the night before the West Virginia game, however thanks to some travel delays I didn’t get to Iowa until almost midnight local time. That put us a little behind here, but a 7 p.m. kickoff for WVU-Iowa State gives me some time to keep this thing going.

Here’s WVU quarterback Will Grier during his media availability Tuesday in Morgantown.

Here are WVU quarterback Will Grier and offensive coordinator Jake Spavital on several topics, including what went wrong Saturday as Grier tossed three interceptions in a win against Kansas.

Good morning from unseasonably warm Morgantown!

It’s homecoming and Gold Rush day at Milan Puskar Stadium for today’s noon kickoff against visiting Kansas.

I started on the WVU beat after the first game this season, so things were always going to seem like they were flying by for me. Still, Week 6 seems like it got here in a hurry. Part of that is also probably due to the cancellation of the WVU-N.C. State game a few weeks ago. Either way, we’re pretty much at the halfway point of the regular season and its almost time to start thinking about bowl game positioning for some teams.
