Dana Holgorsen, who despises the idea of playing two quarterbacks, said today that if Saturday’s game were tomorrow, he’d probably be playing Clint Millard.

“Thankfully,” he said, “we have practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to see where we’re at.”

* Holgorsen also said junior linebacker Shaq Petteway tore an ACL and will miss the season. That hurts, obviously at linebacker, but also on special teams. He and Nana Kyeremeh were good players on multiple units there.

* As expected, Team Raese’s lawsuit was not dismissed in court today.

* IMG College revealed that Dwight Wallace is back as the color commentator and Jed Drenning is back as the sideline reporter. Dale Wolfley and Amanda Mazey join the game day crew as ancillary commentators.

Whither Mike Logan? I’m told he backed out after giving the arrangement some thought. I’m not sure why, but when I called him last week and he declined to comment on his role because it had not yet been finalized, he also said in conversation he’d just gotten married. One wonders if the timing wasn’t right.

And people are bummed out about this.

Though maybe not as bummed out as they are about the return of Wallace. Before this summer, I had no idea he was so disliked. One person bemoaning the decision called it “French commentary. ‘We, we, we, we, we.’ “

* Holgorsen was asked if Andrew Buie was left off the depth chart because there was only room for four running backs or if there was something else to explain it (and you know what that means).

“No,” he said, “not at this point.”

Uh?

* Finally, did someone ask me about kickoffs? Holgorsen said Mike Molinari will handle that job, which is what the coaches wanted all along. It somewhat shores up the problem the Mountaineers had and probably still will have with kickoffs this season.

“We don’t have a guy who can put it in the end zone,” special teams coordinator Joe DeForest said. “That’s a problem.”

That’s obvious. That’s hard to explain, too. The NCAA shook up the rulebook last season and moved the kickoff spot up 5 yards to the kicking team’s 35-yard line, but also added 5 yards to a touchback. That last part may have escaped you because the Mountaineers were pretty bad at kickoffs last season.

They were actually one of the worst. Out of 120 FBS teams, WVU was No. 87 in average kickoff distance (59.86 yards) and No. 95 in the percentage of kickoffs that were touchbacks (24.73).

“The rule should have helped us,” DeForest said.
