You are looking live inside United Spirit Arena, home of Texas Tech women’s and men’s basketball. More on that in a moment. Lots going on in this picture. Bob Huggins is doing his pregame sit-down with Tony Caridi, capably flanked by his formidable one-man security force, C.J. Culliton.

I would not want to cross that man, not because he looks like he’d cuillton me into the hospital, but because I’ve had nothing but amiable interactions with him and his raining blows down upon me, or someone who dares to get too familiar with Huggins, would change that visage.

In the background, you’ll see WVU warming up before the 1:46 p.m. tip. Not pictured: Matt Humphrey, who is back on campus once again nursing that shooting shoulder back to health.

Betwixt foreground and background, slugging some Gatorade, is Terry Henderson. He’s not warming up and he winced during the brief part I saw him participate in before this shot, which was after he went to the locker room, presumably for some sort of treatment. I’m told he’s doubtful.

As for the gym …

Very ordinary, but there’s nothing wrong with that. What stood out upon entering the place was the aggressive tip of the cap to women’s hoops — which has quite the legacy here.

The spotlight is a little less bright upon the men’s team.

People still wear Nos. 1 and 22 here, so those are not “retired” numbers. Bobby Knight’s cup of coffee gets marquee billing. Then again, the men’s team doesn’t have the national title Swoopes and Kirkland led the team to in 1993 and has only been to the Sweet Sixteen five times and not since 2005.

You remember that game.

Not going to lie to you. I miss Tyrone Sally for that reason. He was a warrior that tournament. I’ll never, ever forget the Sally Rally to end the Creighton game, but that play was uniquely special, too.

That’s the last and only time these two teams met. This one isn’t as appealing, but it’s still significant for WVU. It begins a stretch of three straight games and four out of five against teams in the Big 12’s bottom four.

If WVU is going to entertain thoughts about entertaining thoughts about the NCAA Tournament, it can’t lose one of those four and would do well to win all five. If a NIT bid is in the air, well, it really can’t afford to fall apart here, either.

And I know you’re asking, “Mike, what’s up with the title?” Glad you asked. This is a real thing on campus and you know where I’m going after I post my story this afternoon.
