On “small” sports …

Time to grab the spotlight and turn it away from the Big Two at WVU. Yes, it’s football and basketball time, but it’d be unfair to ignore a few other things happening at the university.

Begin with the women’s cross country team, which has never been better.

The West Virginia University cross country team is ranked No. 5 in the final U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations (USTFCCCA) Division I Women’s National Poll, released today.

The No. 5 ranking matches the Mountaineers’ best mark in school history. WVU also achieved the No. 5 ranking on Oct. 21, and Oct. 28.

It goes beyond a ranking, though. The Mountaineers won their regional over the weekend and qualified for the national championship, which — never mind, I don’t want to jinx anything.

The top 25 overall finishers are automatically named to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Team. WVU had six runners earn the honor, the most ever in school history. The previous record was four runners in 2004.

With the win, WVU automatically qualifies for the NCAA National Championships, which will take place on Nov. 24, in Terre Haute, Ind. This will be the first back-to-back appearances for the Mountaineers at nationals. WVU has made a total of four previous appearances at nationals: 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2007.

Just another one of the non-revenue sports that, with Sean Cleary, has a really good coach who recruits well and develops motivated athletes. Oh, Canada!

Then there’s Craig Turnbull, who’s had his share of winners at WVU, but is assembling a pretty good recruiting class almost out of nowhere. No offense to that coach or that program, which surely deserves this, but WVU doesn’t jump out as an Iowa or Oklahoma State. At least not yet.

A big reason for the decision was West Virginia assistant coach Greg Jones, a three-time NCAA champion.

Jones won titles at 174 and 184 pounds, which are the weights Mancuso likely will wrestle at in college.

“The only thing I can do is get better wrestling him,” Mancuso said. “He’s probably the best practice partner you can possible have.”
