Nice work, if you can get it

Hardly a negative review exists of the Big East’s decision to promote John Marinatto to the commissioner’s position effective July 1, 2009. I’ll fall in line because I’ve always been a fan of continuity and, call me crazy, but I think people who know the infrastructure of an organization are best suited to improve said organization.

Does it always work? God no. Yet if you work so hard to build something up and the leader departs, don’t you owe it to yourself to allow a follower to become the leader?

This isn’t at all like a coaching change or a quarterback change or maybe even an athletic director change. It’s about 16 schools and the administrators, coaches and student-athletes for every sport, as well as all the other conferences, television networks, sponsors, partners, etc.

The Big East has been through a catalog of crisises crisi definining moments and Marinatto has been at the capable Mike Tranghese’s right for so many of them in the past six years. Marinatto happened to be in the right place at the right time and, as such, is the right man for a job that shouldn’t be all too difficult now.

Not surprisingly, those who selected him offered nothing but high praise, using such phrases as “he will serve the conference with great honor and distinction” and that he will be “a visionary leader.”

There was not a negative voice in the house and there is no reason to believe there should be.

Now, back to my envy of the man who will lead the Big East into the future, and rest assured it has nothing to do with the fact that he will be able to get free tickets to a West Virginia-DePaul volleyball game.

No, I am envious because this man doesn’t seem to have a damn thing to do.

Tranghese has taken care of everything.
