The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Scrimmage notes

Take it for what you will, but here was the first first- and second-team offenses and defenses at WVU’s first summer scrimmage Saturday.

OFFENSE

QB: Patrick White, Jarrett Brown
TB: Noel Devine, Zach Hulce
LT: Don Barclay, Matt Timmerman
LG: Greg Isdaner, John Bradshaw
C: Mike Dent, Gino Gradkowski
RG: Jake Figner, Josh Jenkins
RT: Selvish Capers, Jon Walko
WR: Alric Arnett and Tito Gonzales, Ryan Nehlen and Ezra Tilaye
Slot: Jock Sanders and Dorrell Jalloh, Mark Rodgers and D.J. Thomas
TE/FB/H-Back: Tyler Urban, Ryan Clarke

– Hulce carried once and lost a fumble. He had to run the stadium steps and was done for the day. Terence Kerns came in and had arguably the best day. He looked to be putting a lot of things together after a breakaway run early in the scrimmage.

– Stephen Maw began with third string at RT, but practiced with the 1s and 2s. Jenkins played some LG and looked pretty good. Barclay started for Ryan Stanchek, who was out again.

– Jarrett Brown “tweaked” a hamstring, according to Bill Stewart, and Brad Starks took most of the leftover snaps. Coley White played a lot. Older brother Parick scored the lone touchdown against the first-team defense. A 45-yard run set up a short TD.

– Wes Lyons didn’t scrimmage. He had his right knee scoped a few days ago and is out a week. Freshman J.D. Woods, who had been pushing at the outside spot, was out with a shoulder. Nehlen caught a touchdown pass from Starks.

– Urban took advantage of Will Johnson’s absence (ankle) and caught a corner route in a drill when the offense started at the 2-yard line.

DEFENSE

DE: Zac Cooper, Larry Ford
NT: Chris Neild, Doug Slavonic
DT: Scooter Berry, Josh Taylor
SLB: Mortty Ivy, John Holmes
MLB: Pat Lazear, Anthony Leonard
WLB: J.T. Thomas, Ovid Goulbourne
CB: Ellis Lankster and Kent Richardson, Brandon Hogan and Keith Tandy
FS: Eain Smith, Anthony Wood
Spur safety: Boogie Allen, Nate Sowers
Bandit safety: Quinton Andrews, Sidney Glover

– Holmes recovered a fumble on the second-team’s first play from scrimmage. Hogan recovered a fumble on the second-team’s third play.

– Guesly Dervil, who was working for a starting cornerback spot, sat out after dislocating a finger on his left hand. He should be good to go Monday, but will wear a protective wrap.

– The defensive line and linebackers were constantly rotating. Linebacker Najee Goode has the hit of the day when he burst through the middle of the line and stuffed Kerns on a short run at the goal line.
