Dressed for success
August 7, 2008 by Mike CasazzaPractices are now closed, so we can’t talk much about that. Let’s instead discuss how the coaches are clothed.
Bill Stewart’s hat has been the MVP of practice. It needs a scholarship. By the way, Stew wore the spandex tights under the baggy shorts this day.
Quarterbacks coach-offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen, who has yet to decide whether or not to keep his summer goatee, has worn khaki shorts every day. He had cargo shorts Wednesday. “I like the heavy pockets.” Mullen hopes someone from the equipment staff can add a Flying WV to a couple pairs to look more official.
Fullbacks-tight ends coach Doc Holliday has the official shorts as well as that sharp long-sleeve gold T-shirt. Just watching him the first few days, I think he’d take shoulder pads and a helmet and get right in the middle of things.
Seeing as if running backs-slot receivers coach Chris Beatty got married in the spring and didn’t tell anyone on the staff until afterward, it wouldnt’ surprise me to learn he has a MMA fight this weekend. Why else would he be wearing layers — sometimes a sweatshirt under the pullover, other times just a long-sleeve T — to every practice?
Wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway keeps it simple, but I dig the Oakleys. The short black socks are a subtle touch, too. He could have worn white ones, but he took the extra step.
Offensive line coach Dave Johnson is as understated in appearance as he is in performance. If you could translate his coaching style — calm, direct, insightful, respectful, encouraging — to an outfit, it’d be exactly what you see. By the way, he’s fired up in this picture.
Defensive coordinator-linebackers coach Jeff Casteel really gets into it in practice. He flies around the field to speak with different players at different positions, but also works hard with the linebackers, the team’s most talented position. He needs to dress comfortably. You could tell he was excited about the start of practice — he forgot his hat. Casteel never forgets his hat.
This just in: Cornerbacks coach David Lockwood is fighting on the undercard before Beatty Saturday night. This can’t be comfortable.
Safeties coach Steve Dunlap has what Beatty and Lockwood didn’t have — the Flying WV on the front of the floppy hat.
Finally, defensive line coach Bill Kirelawich and his towel.
