The first full-length episode of Radio Free Charleston for 2015 features music from Farnsworth and Hellblinki, plus animation and vintage Toy Commercials. “World’s Best Comics Shirt” sports host segments shot around The Charleston Post Office on Super Bowl Sunday and the show clocks in at just under twenty minutes.
We open the show with a couple of vintage MEGO action figure commercials. We hope you like these, because we’re toying with the idea of producing a series of compilations of toy commercials for PopCult in the near future.
Farnsworth were part of the 200th episode of Radio Free Charleston with the music video for their song, “20 Days.” At that time they were a three-piece, but since then, they’ve reverted to the core duo of Chris Vance and Jason Reese. We recorded the band last April at The Empty Glass, right before they expanded into a trio, and since they’ve gone back to being a two-piece, we decided to dig back into our raw video libary and see what we had in the vault.
We discovered two songs that had never been mixed or edited, so rather than let them languish in unfinished form, we edited the two songs, which open and close this week’s show. First up, you’ll hear “Written Already.” Playing us out is a really sharp performance of “20 Days,” from their “Live It” album (which is available at Sullivan’s Records and online from Twin Cousins Records).
With Radio Free Charleston’s new streaming show at New Appalachian Radio, I’ve been doing a lot of digging in the RFC Archives, which stretch back more than twenty-five years. One of the unexpected treasures I uncovered was a big chunk of unedited video and audio that we shot at The Empty Glass back in 2009 of
Hellblinki, buddies of ours from North Carolina.
Andrew Hellblinki, from 2009
We did use one of the songs from this session way back on
episode 100 of RFC, so I had the bright idea to revisit this footage with a new audio mix and widescreen edit, and present it in an episode with a band we featured 100 episodes later. Just to tie this all together, Chris Vance, of Farnsworth, was also on episode 100 as a member of Eva Elution.
But it was a real treat to find a gem like this on one of the backup drives, and re-editing it reminded me how cool it was to see Andrew, Valerie and John-Paul when they were touring. We bring you their song, “Gypsy Noodle,” and you might be pleased to know that we have enough material left from this session to treat you to a Hellblinki episode of The RFC MINI SHOW sometime later in February.
Weird Dance Piece
Our animation this time is “Weird Dance Piece” by your faithful PopCulteer and RFC host. It’s probably going to be the first in a series, but only time will tell.
That’s the dirt on episode 207 of Radio Free Charleston. Thanks for watching and for supporting the vast and sprawling RFC mulit-media empire.
