The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

An heir to the “And Also” throne?

Players and assistant coaches spoke to reporters Tuesday, and I’ve got some good news for the text-over-video crowd: A transcript. Included is this nugget about the situation at cornerback.

There are three guys that I feel that are starters, (redshirt senior cornerback) (Antonio) Crawford, (redshirt senior cornerback) (Maurice) Fleming and (redshirt senior cornerback) Rasul (Douglas). Those three will see the majority of the snaps, with, (redshirt senior cornerback) Nana (Kyeremeh) being the next guy in.

Back in April, we had a look at West Virginia’s roster and noted some openings. Call them “opportunities,” I guess, because someone was going to get to fill those openings, and the smart money was on newcomers.

Eighteen would arrive between the spring — when defensive end Reese Donahue, defensive lineman Jeff Pooler, linebacker Logan Thimons, safety Dylan Tonkery, cornerback Jacquez Adams, quarterback Cody Saunders, running back Kennedy McKoy, receiver Marcus Simms and offensive lineman Jacob Buccigrossi were on hand — and the start of preseason camp on Aug. 2.

A bunch of those 18 would have a chance. So, we wondered…

The Mountaineers have nine freshmen on campus already who were with the team for the spring, and a couple of them are going to play in the fall, more because of skill than because of circumstance, though certainly a combination is involved. The team will welcome 18 high school grads and junior college transfers during the summer who did not do spring football with the team.

So here’s a fun over/under: How many of the 18 will play in the fall?

We went through the names and the scenarios from there and decided that 12.5 was a clever over/under. Months later, that spot was damn accurate.

Dana welcomes you to the regular season

See that contraption in the upper-right hand corner? That’s a lighting unit. It’s never in my shot, because I place the camera in the middle. I went for the middle today, and then some kid sat right in front of it to film the news conference. So I had to slide to the right, and that put me behind that lighting unit, which forced Dana Holgorsen to vacate the podium and lean left to see who was asking that amazing question. And we thought the preseason was over?

It actually came out before West Virginia’s, but the home team’s two-deep cannot wait. Missouri’s? We could put it on the back burner Monday and get to it today.

This is not to say the Tigers are not worth discussing. They are.

Tuesday Haiku

Meanwhile, the guessing game begins at the Puskar Center.

WVU has a depth chart

There are really no surprises and hardly any developments on offense, defense and special teams, and I maintain that’s one of the best things WVU has going for it as it approaches the opener.

That said, there are a few notes, beginning with the offense.

Receiver Shelton Gibson

Dana Holgorsen said Shelton Gibson should have “easily” been a 1,000-yard receiver last season. Gibson disagrees. He should have had 1,500 yards, he says. The difference? Well, there were the drops as well as the uneven performances.

Noble Nwachukwu had 8 1/2 sacks last season. That’s the third-best total in the past 10 seasons at WVU. But he’s back for his senior season, and Tony Gibson believes the Texan can best any tackle one-on-one.

Does he have to? Yes and no.

Defense/special teams assistant Mark Scott

Do you remember when Mark Scott was hired? It was the start of spring practice in 2015, and West Virginia had been linked to a couple of coaches you’ve probably heard of before. I’m certain someone mentioned Chip West at some point. But at the end of the first news conference before the first spring practice, Dana Holgorsen said he’d hired Scott.

Except, like, nobody heard him say it.

Friday Feedback

Welcome to the Friday Feedback, which sees just one last hurdle between us and it. We’ve placed all these obstacles along the way to the regular season — media days, the start of camp, the big scrimmage, the end of camp, the mock game week, things like that — but this is the beginning of the end of the offseason.

Today, West Virginia does that seemingly trivial/seemingly priceless mock Friday night, in which the team gets on a bus and goes to the hotel and simulates a Friday before a home game. Tomorrow will be treated much like a game day, and the Mountaineers will do some important physical and mental reps and finish it off by singing “Country Roads” at the end.

And then that’s it. Sunday is an ordinary Sunday. Meetings. Film. A light workout. Monday is an off day for school. Tuesday is prep for a real, live opponent. We really need it, too. I wrote a story about Marvin Gross. I’m concerned about who the backup place kicker is. I know what happens if Hodari Christian gets hurt. I need to know who’s on the front line in kickoff returns. It’s bad.

Onto the Feedback. As always, comments  appear as posted. In other words, you’re always on the clock.

I don’t understand the stuff about him having a safety body. Did Daryl Worley have a safety body? (He is going to probably start for the Panthers.)

It just seemed weird. I just want the two best corners to play.

He’s big? Bigger than a cornerback typically is? He’s stout and he can run, and you kind of need that at safety if you’re going to be used in coverage but also asked to come up and cover tight ends and stop the run. WVU uses a nickel similarly.
