The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

That’s Gross!

Marvin Gross, everybody! Instead of saying something along the lines of, “If somebody would have told you a year ago …” I’ll instead say this: “Nobody would have told you this a year ago.” For all we knew, he was just a guy, and we weren’t even allowed to talk to him.

Local flavor

The fella behind West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen? That’s Charlestonian Derrek Pitts. He’s probably going to play as a true freshman. He and four other in-state players are in line for playing time in the fall on defense alone.

The number of state natives on the depth chart should be encouraging to the high school players and coaches within our craggy state lines.

“[The talent] keeps getting better and we keep recruiting it,” Gibson said.

“People grow up here and want to be a part of it,” Lewis said. “You live and breathe it.”

“If they’re good enough to help us win, we’re going to recruit them,” Gibson said. “As a coach, though, you don’t look at them and say, ‘He’s a West Virginian; we’re going to play him.’ That’s not the way it works. I like my job. We’re going to play the best 11.”

Is Quondarius Qualls small?

On the same day we learned West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen is no longer discussing injuries, we discovered one major name is back at practice, four receivers and a running back are trying to replace Shelton Gibson as the kickoff returner, Marvin Gross remains a bad man and junior college recruits are shrinking but still ought to help WVU’s needy pass rush.

“Ezekel’s been repping with the first and second group all spring long, so we’ve seen him a bunch,” Gibson said. “The one thing that stands out about him is he may not always go to the right spot, but he goes there 100 mph.”

Here comes baseball

West Virginia’s baseball team went on the road last month and lost two out of three to Old Dominion, including its third walk-off loss of the season, and settled in at 8-7.

The Mountaineers are 17-10 today. On Wednesday, five pitchers handcuffed Morehead State in a 5-1 win. And before you say, “Morehead State. So what?” understand Morehead State was 22-6 with nine straight wins and 17 wins in the past 18, because the Eagles rake.

Secure feelings

Hey, new coach, new drill. I didn’t catch West Virginia’s running backs coach, Tony Dews, at the media gathering Tuesday, but I found him on the field putting his touches on practice.

What’s one more day?

As you had better already know, West Virginia’s season-opening game against Virginia Tech was moved last week from the opening Saturday to the opening Sunday night. As you can tell from a sneaky snarky comment, Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen knows the value therein.

Updates coming to these updates

West Virginia’s spring practice is open to reporters for 30 minutes this afternoon, but head coach Dana Holgorsen will be surrounded by reporters for his weekly briefing before that. Someone will ask about injuries, and Holgorsen will sigh and we will march onward. Of the other items he can be expected to discuss, here’s a bunch of weekend notes on receivers, running backs and the defensive line.

By the sounds of it, no one is too happy with the quality and/or quantity of receivers making their way through spring football at West Virginia. It’s the complete opposite of what the Mountaineers have going at running back. “I wish we had that kind of competition at other positions,” head coach Dana Holgorsen said.

True, but especially at receiver.

Think and ink

Late last week, West Virginia receivers coach Tyron Carrier signed a one-year deal to remain on the coaching staff. That was to be expected, but it’s nevertheless notable for a few reasons.
