The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Stew, have mercy!

I think Oll Stewart really likes Brian Bennett … and now I know he likes history.

We have a quote in our weight room from General Patton, who was a VMI rat before he went to West Point, did you know that? And it says “May God have mercy on my enemies, because I won’t.”

That’s the way William Tecumseh Sherman was when he took Atlanta. There are times when you’ve got to kick butt. There are also times you learn to retreat to fight another day. There’s also times when you have to be an Omar Bradley, you have to be a compassionate man that sits back and sees the big picture. There are times when you have to be Ike Eisenhower that says “Dammit, this is the plan, I’m sticking with it and I’m going to stick to my gut.” So you have to have all those qualities as a football coach.

Part Patton, part Sherman, part Bradley, part Ike and yet the guy’s coming into his own. I don’t know, it just seems to me he understands it’s all his now and he’s not there for whatever reason people want to use against him. I kind of admire he’s unchanged on what transpired last season — and this is his quote:  “We probably weren’t as good as some people thought.” That’s a fairly honest assessment.

That’s the biggest problem I had last year. Every West Virginia fan wanted to play the game on paper and say, “We had this guy back, this guy back, this guy back.” But I had no O-lineman get invited to (an all-star) bowl game, and I had no linemen drafted off what was supposed to be one of the best lines in America. We lost Owen Schmitt, Stevie Slaton and Darius Reynaud. We had seven new starters on defense who were freshmen or sophomores. I’m very, very proud of what we did. And anyone who doesn’t see that, I don’t even want to talk to them.

(5:45 p.m. update: It’s Villanova.)

In a little more than an hour from now, Markus Kennedy, one of WVU’s biggest recruiting targets for the 2010 recruiting class, will commit to either Villanova, WVU or Temple. Strong indications point to it being a Big East school, just not yours.

Markus Kennedy will make a verbal commitment today that should make some college basketball coach happy. Sources have told the Daily News that he will select Villanova over West Virginia and Temple. Kennedy won’t say officially until today at 1:30 at his press conference at Living Faith Christian Academy, in Pennsauken, N.J.

What Villanova will be getting is a 6-9, 250-pound rising senior power forward who has three-point range, can bang inside, if needed, and fill coach Jay Wright’s void for a large presence near the basket in 2010.

I’m told it’s a veritable jump ball here. Kennedy apparently loved his unofficial visit April 9, but was also very impressed by Villanova’s Final Four run and his visit to its campus, which isn’t very far from home … and Kennedy is a bit of a family guy.

Six alive!

Baseball team ends five-game skid. Receives assist from rain. Oh, and of that five-game skid, it’s not as if WVU simply forgot how to win. Rather, opponents remembered how to pitch. Really, really pitch.

They were outscored 39-17 and actually shutout once in a 3-0 loss in the series finale at Notre Dame. They never scored more than six runs after scoring more than six in all but seven of the first 35 games.

“In four straight games, we saw as good of pitching as you’re going to see in college baseball,” Van Zant said. “The four arms we ran into were really, really good.”

The Irish ended the series with back-to-back complete games. South Florida’s first starter went the distance and the second went eight innings. The foursome’s combined record is now 19-10.

The season (supposedly) continues tonight with a fun little late-season nonconference game against Maryland. Wear gold.

‘Don’t come in and Vanderjagt it!’

It took all of one day for the Indianapolis media to fall for Pat McAfee. The now former WVU punter was a guest Monday on the Dan Dakich show — yeah, that Dan Dakich. McAfee, as you might expect, killed it. Especially when the conversation turned to former WVU kickers who played for the Colts.

Said McAfee:

Ah, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this. Mike Vanderjagt. What you need to know is he is not a good representation of kickers from West Virginia. I need you to understand that. I need you to understand that. Please.

Dakich then advised McAfee “don’t come in here and Vanderjagt it” and McAfee assured him he would not.

Maybe it’s early, but it appears Pat White will wear No. 6 in Miami. Oh, and he’s really in the mix at QB now that Miami’s released the apparently very polite John Beck.

Though they will remain private, according to Dan Mazzulla.

“He has some personal issues and he’s being treated as we speak,’’ Mazzulla said. “It’s a delicate issue.’’

He would not go into any detail other that to say the issues are medically related.

“He absolutely loves it there. He’s getting the proper treatment,’’ Mazzulla said. “He hopes to stay.’’

WSJ will burst your bubble

Perhaps because the economy is in such good shape and the decision-makers are tired of delivering good news, the Wall Street Journal has an interesting technique it’d like to share with you about projecting success in college football.

Last season, eight of the top 10 teams in the final Associated Press poll began the season with at least 65 combined career starts by their offensive linemen, including title-game participants Florida and Oklahoma. Two of 2008’s biggest surprises, Utah and Ole Miss, had more than 80 starts of experience, enabling them to improve dramatically on offense. Conversely, Georgia, Missouri and Clemson — three preseason top-10 teams that disappointed — were green up front, with fewer than 40 starts each.

Elementary! And how does that shape the coming season? Not well if you’re one with the Mountaineers.

WVU’s starting offensive line hasn’t been this inexperienced since the coaching transition from the retiring Don Nehlen to Rodriguez in 2001, when senior guard Brad Knell of Poca brought the only 12 returning starts to the Mountaineer big ‘uns.

The ’09 numbers would be skewed even more toward greenness had senior center Mike Dent not suffered a season-ending neck injury and missed the final four 2008 regular-season games and Meineke Car Care Bowl victory, turning the job over to then-sophomore Eric Jobe.

Now for the pink elephant

It’s been standing there in the corner today and we haven’t really addressed it. What is the future of Joe Mazzulla after his latest off-the-court exploit?

Topics like this tend to fascinate and frustrate me. Why? There are reasons, but manly it’s because I often do know and have relationships with the people involved. On some levels, there is admiration for who they are and what they do and it frankly sucks to see people fall.

In addition, public opinion sometimes frightens me. There are people who see the offense and form their conclusion around just that. They never study or bother to learn about what’s really happened. There are also people who are more measured and try to be rational. Frequently, they arrive at the same conclusion and this case is no different.

A lot of people think Joe has to go. I can see that. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened if the episode does in fact warrant such an outcome. I just happen to disagree with that course of action. And, of course, people disagree with me. It happens, though I certainly don’t mind. In fact, I rather like observing and enhancing the discussion. Let’s take a look, shall we?
