The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

We need a Witness!

The news is flying happily that Xavier’s Jordan Crawford dunked on LeBron James yesterday at the King’s basketball camp in Akron, Ohio. The footage is not flying whatsoever.

Turns out, there were at least two cameras rolling Monday night when Crawford dunked on Jamesduring a pick-up game here at the LeBron James Skills Academy. It was a two-handed jam, the kind that would’ve circulated quickly on YouTube. But Nike officials eliminated that possibility shortly after the dunk happened by allegedly confiscating tapes from various cameramen.

Freelance photographer Ryan Miller was one of the cameramen shooting the game.

He told CBSSports.com that Nike Basketball Senior Director Lynn Merritt took his tape.

“He just said, ‘We have to take your tape,'” Miller said. “They took it from other guys, too.”

Shucks, if we only knew someone who was there, either participating or observing. What’s that? We do?

Braylon Heard, come on down

I’m told the talented running back/defensive back from Youngstown, Ohio, has pledged to WVU and the recruiting class of 2010.

Don’t underestimate the meaning in Barry Brunetti securing an invitation to Steve Clarkson’s Super Seven quarterback retreat — it means something, beyond “I’m next door to the ocean,” which, of course, is never a bad thing.

Your Dee Proby update

He’s the headline recruit for NAIA power Oklahoma City University.

Proby spent his junior year with West Virginia, playing sparingly. He is known as a skilled outside shooter and passer.

“We’re really pleased with this year’s recruiting class,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “We believe we have a good balance of skill players, guards and interior players. We are looking forward to working with them in the fall to prepare for the upcoming season.”

I’ll stop you now: No, I haven’t heard anything about what WVU will do with the other scholarship. Not offocially, at least. There is, however, some smoke and we’re close to arriving at the point where some sort of action must be taken.

Some update, huh?

Excuse me, Mr. President…

To varying ranges of fanfare, Dr. James Clements officially entered office as WVU President last week. He’s a busy man, as you’d surely hope and expect, and one of these days we’re going to sit down with the man and pick his brain on myriad topics relating to WVU sports.

I have a few questions and topics, but I’m just me. If given the platform, what might you ask the President. Remember, he’s a key figure in a key time at the University. Please skip past the obvious — Pastilong, basketball practice facility, college football playoff, et. al. — and put some thought into this. Don’t waste the man’s time!

PBC bereft of Mountaineers

For the past two summers, WVU’s men’s basketball team has participated and starred in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club’s summer Pro Am league. Plans were for that to again be the case this summer.

The league is certified by the NCAA for Division I competition and will feature many of the top players from area Division I schools Pitt, West Virginia, Robert Morris and Duquesne.

Scan the rosters and you won’t find one WVU player.

Friday Feedback

Welcome to a Welcome Back edition of the Friday Feedback. Set off the fireworks! Pretty good quasi-week considering Monday was blank and I think half the American workforce mailed it in Thursday. I’m not sure anyone is actually at work today, except me. Anyhow, a few neat little topics came along that carried the days, but, wouldn’t you know it, WVU-Marshall demanded out attention.

I mean, demanded!

This garbage you spew is very unprofessional and typical of a self centered delusional Mountaineer fan. One of the 1 for 1s that you would like to see inked or played has already been fulfilled. Marshall went to Cincy in 2007 and Cincy rolled into Huntington last year.

Just because you say something, doesn’t make it true. You can talk about all this strongarm stuff that you want, but the truth is MU helps WVU. Nobody in their right mind, especially somebody leading such a prestigious football program as WVU, would sign a contract that put their program in jeopardy. If MU didn’t benefit WVU, Pastilong wouldn’t have signed.

Just tell the truth:

1. You don’t like Marshall
2. You are afraid Marshall will beat WVU
3. You make demeaning statements about Marshall, because you think such statements make you and WVU look better.
4. In the back of your mind you know WVU is not an elite program and you are scared to death that the wheels will fall of this dream ride any day.

People that make the “high school” stadium coments obviously don’t think before they speak. If MU’s stadium is too small, then stop playing ECU, UCONN, Cincy, Louisville, and Rutgers. Besides, if you play in Huntington that is 20,000 less chances that one of your fans will be wearing a “West F@#$%^& Virginia” shirt on TV.

First, do you feel better? Second, allow me to answer you point-by-point:

1. You got me.
2. ” ” ”
3. ” ” ”
4. ” ” ”

Onto the Feedback. As always, comments appear as posted. In other words, mind the pumpkins!

WVU fans (and I’m one of the biggest) and their absolute dismissiveness on this issue astounds me. Why shouldn’t we play Marshall home and home? Why does a 2 and 1 deal really make it any different? I love making fun of the herd as much as the next guy but I really don’t get our recalcitrance here.

Marshall is the only other division one program in the state. Competition is a good thing and despite Marshall’s decline of late, they’re still a good football school with a good football history, and they look a heck of a lot better as a win on our schedule than Liberty or Villanova. Do we really prefer to pay UNLV 3/4 of a million bucks than play in Huntington every other year?

The Biig East ain’t getting any stronger any time soon; let’s say (hypothetically here) we run the table, go undefeated, and we got 1 or 2 of these throw away games on our resume. Meanwhile, Oklahoma is 10 and 2 with a big 12 title and Florida is 10 and 1 with the SEC title. WVU just isn’t getting the nod from the Lee Corsos of the FBS world.

I just don’t see how it hurts us as a program, and it does a lot for a state to have a good rivalry, something that will never happen as is.

This gets the lead for two reasons: the name and the use of the word recalcitrance. I see your points, even if they are a tad idealistic … and I’d honestly prefer an idea world. Far less complicated that way. The bottom line, however, is the bottom line and for WVU it doesn’t make financial sense to do the 1-for-1. It’s unfortunate, but sentiment can’t override business. Take away the fact it’s Marshall. Why would WVU play … Tulsa home-and-home every year? It wouldn’t happen. To tie this comment and the prior one together, I completely understand WVU’s stance. I’m not saying it’s wrong or right. I merely understand it and have no problem with that position.

Some basketball notes

A lot of the preseason publication polls already indicate this, but the Big East more or less added to the speculation WVU will be one of the league’s and nation’s top teams next season.

The conference released its basketball opponents schedule today and the Mountaineers play repeat games against Seton Hall (watch them), Pitt (it’s Pitt) and Villanova (a likely pick to win the Big East).

WEST VIRGINIA
Home – Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Villanova
Away -Connecticut, DePaul, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, USF, Villanova

Preliminary thoughts: Marquette at home. … Tampa road trip is the Big East’s best. DePaul is the worst. … The game at St. John’s will most definitely be at MSG, which never hurts, particularly for a team with strong ties to NYC recruiting. … Joe Mazzulla returns to Providence, which could be interesting. … WVU never seems to win at Notre Dame or Connecticut.

In addition, there seems to be a movement to change format of the Big East Tournament, which surprises no one. It’s just probably not the change you think.

… not what you think.

Rivals.com’s top-ranked dual-threat quarterback is in Maui today for Steve Clarkson’s Super Seven quarterback retreat. As you can probably imagine, it’s reserved for the nation’s very best quarterbacks. In addition to being one of those, Brunetti is, of course, planning to head to WVU next summer no matter what others have planned.

“I’m solidly committed, but guys are still trying to pull me away,” Brunetti said. “Mississippi State, Tennessee and Memphis have kind of been the main three. They’re wanting me to stay closer to home, but I feel like I made the best decision.”
