The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

What a novel idea!

Bonds to finance a multi-million dollar facility? Get out! Yet that’s what West Virginia’s Board of Governors has wrought with last week’s vote to allow bonds — technically reimbursement resolutions — to pay for the Mountaineers basketball practice facility.

I’m pretty sure people are passing out V8 in the Coliseum today. Maybe champagne, too. This thing is a lot closer to reality now.

Press conference notes

Nothing really new on Scooter and Reed. Both are probably what you’d call questionable, though Scooter’s shoulder sprain sounds more ominous than Reed’s foot sprain. “Reed’s day-to-day is brighter,” Bill Stewart said. Both will travel to Auburn and Stewart said he’s planning on both playing. That said, there’s a plan in place for Berry’s absence.

Scooter has MRI on shoulder

Bill Stewart did not tell us this. Twitter did.

If you were one of the fewer than 60,000 people who watched Saturday’s game from Mountaineer Field — that’s twice this year after it happened in five of the final six home games last year — and one of the few who watched on ESPN360.com you saw a peculiar offensive formation.

It is the Pistol and it’s the next step in WVU’s quest to be multiple and prevent opposing defenses from sniffing out plays based on personnel and formations.

Two more Floridians come on down

Big recruiting weekend, big crowd, big win, why not add two names to the recruiting class?

Big East after week two

Things are starting to make a little more sense now and teams are indeed standing up or falling down to make this a little easier.

Let’s begin at the top, where Cincinnati is again the unquestioned leader.

1. Cincinnati (2-0, Last week No. 1): As I was looking into last week’s games, I wrote this down about UC v. Southeast Missouri State: “Do they get 70?” It wasn’t as if I doubted they could. I just wondered if they would, as if to prove some sort of point. Point(s) made. And when do we begin to hear these words in the same sentence: Mardy Gilyard, 20 touchdowns, Heisman Trophy. Sooner rather than later, right? Up next: 9/19 at Oregon State.

Texts from ECU Game Day

Another volume, another success. Input was clearly hurt by the ESPN360.com thing, but, at least early on, maybe it was’t so bad that so many people couldn’t watch that game. It wasn’t pretty and I’m not sure it was even ugly.

The game turned, as did the texts and the appreciation for one Jock Sanders, and WVU savored beating ECU. Special teams remain a concern/punchline, but I got the sense that as the volume of texts decreased the belief in the team may have increased, which was precisely what WVU wanted both internally and externally.

Release the texts!

More Texts from Game Day

You know what’s a neat compliment? When someone says to you, “I shouldn’t be telling you this, but …”

Texts from Game Day was a hit and it’s now a keeper idea. I didn’t need much convincing after weeding through them Saturday — many from people I don’t know! — but this week someone who shouldn’t say something like this to me said, “I shouldn’t be telling you this, but the ‘Tweets from Game Day’ [sic] was really funny.” Other people regretted they hadn’t texted and vowed to do so this week. A few said they can’t wait to read Monday’s edition, which brings is to today’s point/plea.

We’re really going to need contributions this time because the game is on something called ESPN360.com. A lot of people won’t be able to watch so you insight is needed. And, no pressure, but we now have a reputation to uphold. Find the number and fire away, please. Thank you, in advance.

Friday Feedback

Welcome to the Friday Feedback, which never puts all its eggs in one basket. Can the same be said about West Virginia? Not so sure.

Look, I get the message: Last year has nothing to do with this year, last week has nothing to do with this week. I just wonder if those are words or beliefs. There’s a difference and it can be a big one. Kids have good memories and hurt can last longer than joy.

Greenville, N.C., hurt last year. Still does today. So much has been made of what happened to WVU at ECU last year that this could very well be a fulcrum point already this season. Allow me to explain.

Huggs embraces schedule

It’s “right up there” with any other one he’s had before. The 2009-10 schedule features some pretty neat numbers:

– between eight and 10 games (depending on the 76 Classic brackets) against teams ranked in the final coaches’ poll

– at least 15 games on television (and more with the Big East Tournament)

– three of ESPN’s nine Big Monday’s and three of CBS’s nine slots given to Big East games.

– seven of the 44 ESPN/ESPN2 Big East conference games

no wonder.

“That’s what you work to be able to do, to put yourself in positions like that,” Huggins said. “I haven’t read any preseason things, but I’ve got to think that Da’Sean (Butler) and Devin (Ebanks) have to be as good a pair of forwards as there are on any team in the country.

“And I know the TV people have always said that the viewers like the way we play and like how hard the guys play the style we play.”
