Breaking: WVU struggles on defense

From Seth Davis’ Hoop Thoughts:

• A Big East coach who has scouted West Virginia told me that part of the Mountaineers’ problem is that their guards who can defend are not good shooters, and their guards who can shoot are not good defenders. Case in point: The Mountaineers could not hit outside shots against Syracuse’s zone, but when Bob Huggins substituted Casey Mitchell into the game, Brandon Triche, the Orange’s freshman point guard, took him to school.

P.S.
This will also be your open post for tonight’s game…

Well, it appears Latwan Anderson is wavering now, too. From Lights Out’s Facebook page at 7:50 p.m. yesterday:

A shovel will break the Earth and commence official construction of the anticipated basketball practice facility Feb. 4. Reception to follow.

That’s one part of the good news. The other — and larger — part is the fundraising is nearly complete thanks in part to a matching grant agreement between WVU and the Ruby Foundation.

Stew’s little Pony

Who knows where this goes — and if Barry Brunetti was involved … or if anyone was, for that matter — but right now a tertiary player with a big role in WVU keeping Brunetti committed is an off-campus strip club in Starkvegas.

Allegedly.

A Mississippi State football recruit who posted on his Facebook page that he went to an adult entertainment club during his official visit to campus says the post on the social networking Web site was a joke.

But Mississippi State is looking into whether any rules were violated this past weekend after the recruit and others referenced a visit to The Pony, a club between Starkville and West Point.

Jameon Lewis of Tylertown High School said he removed the status that said his favorite part of his visit was a trip to The Pony after hearing of the stir it was creating on the Internet.

“It’s no truth,” he said Tuesday. “It was a joke we were playing.”

More of the silly season! MSU is taking it seriously and has issued its statement. I’d like to issue one of my own: Don’t post potentially scandalous details of a recruiting visit on Facebook.

Allegedly.

And then there were none

Remember that firm footing WVU once had in Florida? Well, now that Darius Millines has flipped from the Mountaineers to Marshall, WVU is left with 17 players in its recruiting class and none from Florida.

None!

How could I forget this?

WVU confirmed The Product’s first buyout payment was received today. This makes the Coliseum very happy.

That late-game mention by the CBS Gator Bowl broadcast team in which Bill Stewart told them WVU can be a national title possibility next season is, in fact, true.

Every now and then I wake up from this dream — or at least I remember having it — in which I’m working at the Daily Mail in England and covering the other football. More often than not, I’m caught in the middle of the transfer period (kind of like free agency) and elbow-deep in all the rumors and speculation that go into what they call “the silly season.”

Folks, we’re in the silly season here. Recruiting is subjective and silly enough as it is, but this weekend was just a touch heavier than normal on both.

Friday Feedback

Welcome to the Friday Feedback, which gets its news from all sorts of places — wait until you see the FB/TE coach WVU hires, likely today — and would like to show you what an example.

Here’s an email from Jan. 11 in response to something I’d written a few days earlier in which I presumed Noel would not return to school:

I talked to Tavon after the Louisville game at the Sheetz on Chestnut Ridge Road — no kidding — and he said Noel’s coming back. So, if you want to run info from an 18-year-old who’s not part of Devine’s family, then I say go for it! “We all coming back,” Austin said.

By that date, I think we were all being led to believe Noel would indeed return. However, The Poet was prophetic two months earlier. Impressive! A follow-up from said emailer yesterday:

I will now believe anything Tavon Austin tells me.

Me, too. Come to think of it, maybe we — yes, I — should have just believed Noel. He said last month he planned to come back and hadn’t even filed the paperwork with the NFL to get an evaluation. That should have been a pretty strong indication of his intentions.

True, he left the door open and said the Gator Bowl might impact his decision — and I think we can agree the way the game unfolded was at least minimally impactful — but it occurs to me this all just falls in line with Noel’s career at WVU. He said one thing. Everyone else said another. He’s never really asked for anything special while on campus and simply wants to be himself and do normal things and not be held to and/or against perceptions.

Onto the Feedback. As always, comments appear as posted. In other words, don’t believe everything that you read.

Noel and Jock to return to WVU

(Well, I thought there was a carry-the-day post in there as I traveled back from Tampa, but it apparently had other ideas. My bad. I’ll save it for another day.)

In what qualifies as great, if not unsurprising, news for WVU football, Noel and Jock confirmed Thursday they are not entering the NFL Draft and are coming back to school … on a mission.

Lots of useful quotes in there that, quite honestly, reflect very well on WVU and at a most opportune time in the recruiting cycle. Not only are we getting closer to the Feb. 3 signing date, but Thursday was the last day of a dead period and Friday is the first day of a two-day quiet period. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, steal the headlines with their news and player reviews.
