The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Join Mr. Summers and me for today’s noon game

mantoman

Eight minutes until tip, I’m staring at 14 inches of snow … or as was described last night “a little more than two beer cans.” I was watching the weather channel today and saw a live shot of NYC and there was no snow. It wasn’t even wet. I think I saw sunshine. Alas, I am here, hunkered in for the immediate future and ready for what could be a darn tricky game for WVU.

There’s the emotional Pitt game one one side of this and the anticipated Villanova game on the other. In the middle is St. John’s, losers of four straight and seven of nine. Still, the way the Red Storm guards and pressures can give the Mountaineers trouble and they’ll need nice days from Truck and Mazzulla. The first few minutes ought to be interesting, too, because it usually takes a visiting team a little time to get used to the backdrop they shoot at inside Madison Square Garden. Is that what stops WELLS? We’ll find out…

Sure, why not?

No NYC? Then how about a liveblog tomorrow since a lot of us are about to be knee deep in snow for the next few days and stuck in the house with our wife and kid and Mr. Jameson?

I’m in. See you at noon?

Friday Feedback

(In my hurry to embrace travel trouble, I didn’t publish the edited version of the Feedback. The typos have [mostly] been corrected.)

Welcome to an F Bomb-free edition of the Friday Feedback. Today I leave for New York City and — this is the truth — I had a segment of the flight cancelled last night. That’s a new one. Then again, I’m flying through Washington, D.C., and my leg from there was cancelled for fear of another awful snow storm. Rebooked, I now fly through Columbus … and D.C. This adds four hours to my trip. I give up. (Update: I gave up. See comment below.)

It also must be said this was arguably the finest week yet here at the blog. Lots of good discussion on a number of good topics, but we’re going to gravitate toward one: WVU students and the way they “behave” at basketball games.

WVU’s response to Wednesday night

From WVU’s News and Information Services:

The WVU women’s basketball coach arrived at the alumni center for Thursday’s joint groundbreaking for the basketball practice facility and the physics department’s White Hall project — actually, make that a virtual groundbreaking — and after being told to wear khaki pants and a collared WVU shirt.

Whoops.

Texts from Pitt Game Day

Well, wasn’t that a fine time to dust off Texts From Game Day? No way we could have predicted that last night. So many things to talk about and review from another memorable night inside the Coliseum:

– The Turk’s debut really couldn’t have gone much better. I’ve seen a lot of weird and unexpected things there. That start was up there with the most memorable.

– Ebanks, sans wrist tape, continues to motor along. Every game he’s giving something the teams needs to win. If he’d only dunk the ball near the rim …

– Pitt is a struggling offensive outfit and, quite frankly, it’s weird to see the Panthers in a zone on defense. Totally out of line with their reputation.

– The melee was a bit over-dramatized, I think, but I won’t fault the officials. Yes, the were co-conspirators and their intervention made it look worse than it probably was. That said, the game was at the very least building toward something. If given the chance you have to stop “something” — whatever it is or may be — before it develops.

– Next Friday’s game in the Oakland Zoo is going to be Willie McGee ugly.

– WVU’s students no longer have the right to complain about their reputation. “Oh, they put that on the highlights!?!?” Uh, yeah. You deserved it. And honestly, bragging about said reputation now ceases to be neat.

But we’ll get to all of that eventually. Let’s get to why we’re here. Creep with me as I text through the hood.

(3:57 PM): In case the students are classy eat [it] pitt

(6:55 PM): Fyi, Caridi is calling Kilicli “The Istanbul.” Wonder where he got that.

(7:08 PM): Tv announcers making fun of huggs warmup

(7:11 PM): Wow! What has gotten into Ebanks? I like it!

(7:15 PM): Dickie simpkins needs no triflin clock

WVU v. Pitt, 7 p.m., Big East Network

(Did I mention “Texts from Game Day” before?)

Getaway post time. Off to the 3 pm signing day press conference. I’m told WVU expects no more LOIs today and may have to wait a few days on guys like Latwan Anderson (not looking good) and Ishmael Banks (doesn’t look bad) as well as late additions that either haven’t decided or didn’t sign anywhere today.

Somehow overshadowed is this basketball game that has five intriguing subplots. Listed in no particular order …

(But seriously … “Texts from Game Day?”)

Today is especially busy and I was dumb enough to not only schedule a dentist appointment, but actually move it up five days — Jann Barber does care for people as well as teeth.

Anyhow, that makes time spent here a little scarce today and I realize the signing day thing is pretty important. If you’re not already hooked on one site or service, I suggest following here.

As I write this, WVU had 15 signed national letters of intent including one of those previously undecided additions in Qudral Forte and one flipper in Travis “Says Who?” Bell. You can add Sticks to that list, too, though heretofore swaggerless WVU hasn’t made it official.

For the record, the former Miramar quarterback now has three Miramar receivers to throw the ball to, which might be interesting to non-Miramar quarterback Barry Brunetti. Or not: “They aren’t ganging up on me. They’re going to let the best players play and they’ve got a lot of good players there now.”

Pat McAfee making his rounds

(Just throwing it out there, but how about a return of “Texts from Game Day” tonight?)

Remember Pat McAfee? The guy who didn’t put the ball into the end zone on kickoffs as a senior at WVU? Well, he led the NFL in kickoffs this season. Seriously.

McAfee has the job of punter and kicker with the Colts, sort of. On a team that has two all-time kicking greats on its roster in Adam Vinatieri and Matt Stover, McAfee kicks off for the Colts — his 70-yard average led the NFL last season. He also punts, averaging 44.3 yards as a rookie with 21 of his 64 punts winding up inside the 20.

He’s also at the Super Bowl this week and dreaming not of the game-winning kick, but of the game-beginning kick. A little weird, of course, but that’d be Pat, who seems to be enjoying his week quite nicely.
