An uneventful night in the stands and on the floor for WVU. One is good news — maybe? — while the other is not. WVU’s path toward a two-round Big East Tournament bye became a tad trickier and the conference championship hopes took a major hit with Monday’s loss to Villanova.
An off game for Da’Sean Butler, miserable free-throw shooting, surprisingly ineffective rebounding, an exploited 1-3-1 zone and matadorish man-to-man defense accumulated. Things might have been worse if not for Casey Mitchell’s second-half cameo — and you wonder what, if anything, that means the rest of the way.
And still, it followed that familiar script — seriously, trailing at the half in seven of 12, down by at least 10 in eight of 13 — before going wrong at the end.
“We’re used to being down 11 andgaining the momentum in the second half and keeping it,” said point guard Joe Mazzulla. “We had the momentum and we lost it, and I think at that point in the game we needed to pull it out and execute something and get a good shot and we didn’t do it. We lost the momentum andthe game there in the second half.”
Watch out. I’ma pick these texts up and drop them on their Bilas-hating heeeaaad…heeaaad.
