… and maybe not who you’d think. It was Chris Beatty who last week told meLonnie Galloway was put in charge of Doc Holliday’s vacated territory in Florida. It was Galloway who was labeled the Big East’s best by ESPN.com.

The Mountaineers lost ace recruiter Doc Holliday to Marshall and all of his deep connections to South Florida, but Galloway was able to land four-star receiver Ivan McCartney(Miramar, Fla./Miramar) late in the process over the hometown Miami Hurricanes and others. Throw in Georgia sleeper Quantavious Leslie(Hogansville, Ga./Calloway) and junior college linebacker Bruce Irvin (Stone Mountain, Ga./Mt. San Antonio College), and Galloway had an impressive three-man haul for the top class in the Big East.

Weather got you down?

A Snowflake is one of God’s most Fragile Creations, but look what They can do when They Stick TOGETHER … WV FOOTBALL 2010

Hey, that had me fired up and ready to go shovel and salt whatever my neighbors would allow. Then I saw the weather and I’ve never before seen a forecast of 100% chance of snow and for six straight hours. Those snowflakes are about to stick together and add 5-9″ on top of the 15 or so still outside.

For some reason, of all the changes initiated at the Coliseum last night the one that seemed to matter most was adjusting the way the opponent is introduced. Gone are the placards with the “So what?” “Who cares?” “Big deal!” “Go home!” and “Sucks eggs!” I don’t think anyone was outraged. Some thought it was overdue. Some though it was a misplaced reaction. Others don’t like the idea of lightening the mood before a game.

Whatever the case, in its place was a simlple, albeit tame, collective turning of the backs by students. collective turning of the backs by the students.

With the exception of the actual game, things went fairly well thanks to a coordinated effort leading up to the tip including a more cautious edition of the Maniacs Musing and the distribution of about 15,000 business cards with new house rules (both are included below).

Afterward, reviews were mixed, but President Clements voiced his approval.

WVU president thanks fans for Monday night’s enthusiastic support of team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University President James P. Clements praised the University community, especially the Student Government Association and Mountaineer Maniacs, for creating an improved atmosphere at Monday’s men’s basketball game between WVU and Villanova:

“I want to thank our fans, especially the students, for the way in which they enthusiastically supported our team tonight. They packed the Coliseum and were loud and spirited – but respectful. That’s how a sporting event should be. I want to thank our Student Government Association and the Mountaineer Maniacs who worked closely with the University Administration, Student Affairs, Coach Bob Huggins and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to implement some positive initiatives that focused on good sportsmanship. I was proud of how our fans responded tonight.”

Texts from Big Monday

An uneventful night in the stands and on the floor for WVU. One is good news — maybe? — while the other is not. WVU’s path toward a two-round Big East Tournament bye became a tad trickier and the conference championship hopes took a major hit with Monday’s loss to Villanova.

An off game for Da’Sean Butler, miserable free-throw shooting, surprisingly ineffective rebounding, an exploited 1-3-1 zone and matadorish man-to-man defense accumulated. Things might have been worse if not for Casey Mitchell’s second-half cameo — and you wonder what, if anything, that means the rest of the way.

And still, it followed that familiar script — seriously, trailing at the half in seven of 12, down by at least 10 in eight of 13 — before going wrong at the end.

“We’re used to being down 11 andgaining the momentum in the second half and keeping it,” said point guard Joe Mazzulla. “We had the momentum and we lost it, and I think at that point in the game we needed to pull it out and execute something and get a good shot and we didn’t do it. We lost the momentum andthe game there in the second half.”

Watch out. I’ma pick these texts up and drop them on their Bilas-hating heeeaaad…heeaaad.

(5:53 PM): My rule card says “whatever Huggs says goes” … Um …. Have you ever read his lips or heard him during a game? We can say anything we want!

Jay Wright and His Cuff Links are in the Coliseum tonight and I really can’t think of a reputable opponent that’s harder to taunt and jeer.

Yay or nay?

At the risk of shark-jumping, Texts from Game Day? It’s been asked too often of me today to ignore the possibility. Irregardless, open post coming at 4 p.m.

Da’Sean Butler has, by now, mastered the art of deadpanned replies and tongue-in-cheek delivery. I knew this before I asked him if, perhaps, Villanova was looking forward to seeing Mr. 7-for-7 tonight.

“Me? Why? What’d I do?”

Let’s review.

“It went well. I did OK.”

… well, not exactly, but I think his words can be manipulated in such a way to create an executive decision.

“… I think you can intimidate by being loud and full of energy. When the house is shaking and the students are jumping around, that’s a very intimidating atmosphere.”

I don’t want to go too far with anything and Lord knows no one wants to see any piling on at this juncture, but there’s no class at WVU today. There are thousands of students “biding their time” before the gates open. I’m prepared for anything.

And so, too, is WVU, which huddled throughout the weekend and produced a list of additions and subtractions, “Jump Around” not among them. However, a few changes are guaranteed at the Coliseum for tonight’s Big Monday feature on ESPN.

WVU is closed today, a rare and significant act that rather vividly illustrates the concern about transportation to and from campus. On campus tonight is this WVU v. Villanova game. No tickets can be purchased by conventional means, but you can be reasonably sure several hundred to a few thousand people won’t attend.

That’s … unfortunate … given the recent attention devoted to the WVU fans and how this is maybe a chance to get it right and show off a little bit on national television. Empty seats and probably a thinned out student section — and I could have that one absolutely incorrect; I’ll get to that later — might not look so flattering on ESPN. So there’s a problem there and one we can see from a distance.

I thought about this (honest!) a little while before I received this email:
