The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Fifty-two seconds, folks. Fifty-two seconds

Maybe it’s the nature of working for a newspaper that publishes five days a week and not on Saturday and Sunday that makes me take such an obscure view of things. To be relevant on Monday morning, you need to have a take that is fresh out of the oven, but still invites you to take a taste of what is now two days old. So I watch the game from a slightly askew angle, and then I watch it again, and, well, little things pop up that I tend to highlight. I’m weird, I know, but I’m pretty sure I’m right on this one.

WVU v. Marshall: The good and the bad

The best part about the beginning of the college football season is the return of the pageantry. Cheerleaders, marching bands, tailgates, traditions, TFGD, all the goodies. Saturday felt especially special because of the whole Big 12 thing. And so the marching band’s formation before the team took to the field was indeed good.

As for the other good and bad elements to WVU’s  69-34 win…

Texts From Marshall Game Day

Texts From Game Day is back in business. Found a wonderful app to help me put this together for another year and it’s actually easier than ever — which is ironic because there’s nothing easier than publishing a post in which everyone else does the work!

Wait. Disregard that, OK?

Anyhow, another solid batch of dispatches from inside the stadium and around the country. We have nine states represented this week, which may be a record. I’m not worried if it is or if it isn’t because something tells me all the records are going down in 2012.

I’m talking about money and the power, power and the money. These texts are magic, Stan Van Gundy. My edits are  [in brackets].

Talk about Marshall

Dana Holgorsen does below after the series-ending win— and, personally, good riddance — in which the two teams ran a lot of plays, used a slew of players and set a bunch of records

You are looking live at the debut Mountaineer Mantrip! Early notes from the press box including no Dustin Garrison today. He is not on the dress list. Ditto second-team cornerback Avery WIlliams, safety Matt Moro and linebacker Jewone Snow.

10:01 am: True freshmen on the dress list: Receiver Travares Copeland, quarterback Ford Childress, cornerback Nana Kyeremeh, safety Karl Joseph, safety K.J. Dillon, receiver Jordan Thompson, running back D’Vontis Arnold, cornerback Rick Rumph, linebacker Garrett Hope, defensive end Eric Kinsey, kicker/punter Josh Lambert, long snapper Josh DePalma, nose guard Christian Brown, defensife end Korey Haris and defensive end Noble Nwachukwu.

That’s 15. Fifteen! And yet my favorite number is Josh Lambert wearing 84.

That means the following freshmen are likely on track to redshirt or hurt: cornerback Brandon Napoleon, safety Jarrod Harper, offensive linemen Adam Pankey, Tyler Orlosky and Tony Matteo, receivers Devonte Mathis, Devonte Robinson and Will Johnson and defensive lineman Imarjaye Albury.

Note that junior college offensive lineman Mark Glowinsky is not dressed, either.

Friday Feedback

Welcome to the Friday Feedback, which started as a freshman in 2007. I just wasn’t as cool or collected as this guy.

Don’t you feel good about that? I mean, he’s a freshman, and though he’s been here since January and established himself as a starter rather quickly, he’s still a freshman. But I just can’t see him losing his mind out there and busting routes or mailing in blocks.

That said, the defensive backfield is a little different. The wheels never stop spinning there and you’re often the last line of defense, which means you’re walking dental floss with no net. And when you’ve got some green corners — and last year’s best safety — in front of you, it’s doubly difficult. So welcome to college Karl Joseph, who’s going to play more than Thompson and, quite likely, have more to do with the outcome. Put it this way: Who is Marshall going to ask more questions? Tight spot spot for the young fella.

Oh …

So many things to look at and look for tomorrow, but certainly the performances of guys who have never done it, or been asked to do it, will be atop the list. Those two just seem ready for the moment.

And so am I. No more speculative articles or talking about practice. The real stuff starts now and we get our hands on the damn football for the first time in far too long. Onto the Feedback, which goes well with a live game blog and TFGD double chaser. As always, comments appear as posted. In other words, keep it real.

That picture is wonderful. Thanks for sharing. I hope that everyone clicks on it to enlarge it.

You mean this one? I still can’t not look at it.

Have we lost our minds?

Today, a simple question and an appetizing possibility.

Has college football gone crazy and forgotten Stedman Bailey?

“I hope so,” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “I wouldn’t mind that.”

F Double is in the works, but won’t come until later … and, yes, I grasp that this is pretty much the longest day of the year for you. Here’s help: Eleven things to read so that you get to know the 11th-ranked team in the country before tomorrow’s kickoff.

1) WVU has more Xboxes! Also, the Puskar Center is just a much more comfortable place to be this season.

2) Obstacles and controversy may have made the Mountaineers who and what they were in 2011, but those things are gone now.

3) WVU and Marshall are not playing football against one another any time soon. Saturday ends the series for at least a long time.

Oh boy …

Better hope Marshall didn’t learn this on that trip to Oregon.

(Credit: The Internet. God bless Oregon.)

The game is approaching and with it comes lots of 11th-hour hand-wringing about the freshman who starts at one safety, the freshman who backs up another safety and the two freshmen who are backups at cornerback at WVU.

You are not alone, though, because Marshall has its own green in the defensive backfield.

Thomas, a redshirt junior transfer from Penn State, and LeGrande and Okoroha, senior transfers from Boston College, may be newcomers to the Thundering Herd but they have the task of slowing down quarterback Geno Smith and the Mountaineers’ offense. Yet they’re not newcomers to each other, and that familiarity should help them in their mission at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday (noon, FX).

According to the depth chart Marshall Head Coach Doc Holliday released Tuesday, LeGrande and Okoroha will walk into Morgantown as the Herd’s starting strong safety and free safety, respectively. Thomas will back up redshirt junior Monterius Lovett at corner, but if his participation in Marshall’s open practices are any indication, he’ll see a lot of time on the field and plenty of time there with LeGrande and Okoroha.

There is a difference between freshmen who’ve never played above high school and transfers who haven’t played at their present college, but there are first-time jitters and there is the concern with familiarity. They all have that in common because you just don’t know what you’ll get yet.

Can’t speak for the fellas at Marshall, but you need not worry too much about the freshman starting at safety for WVU. Karl Joseph, who’s been here since January and has been a likely starter since about the middle of the spring, is a pretty cool customer. He’ll at least have that going for him as he’s roaming the secondary Saturday.
