Retirement of a Sport Number
Scope
The retirement of a specific number used by a sport in recognition of an outstanding player must be approved by the Athletic Council following its presentation by the Director of Athletics.
Procedure
The student-athlete under consideration will be screened by the senior staff (Director of Athletics, Deputy Director of Athletics and Associate Athletic Directors) of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and forwarded to the Athletic Council through the Director of Athletics.
The retirement of a specific number must meet the following criteria:

The athlete must have earned an undergraduate degree from West Virginia University.

The athlete’s jersey must have previously been retired at WVU.
-
The athlete must have previously been elected to the WVU Sports Hall of Fame.

The athlete must have previously been elected to the national Hall of Fame of his/her respective sport, if applicable.
-
The athlete must have brought prominence to WVU and/or his/her sport as a member of an Olympic or international team or in the professional ranks.

Retirement of a Jersey
Scope
The retirement of a jersey by a sport in recognition of an outstanding player must be approved by the Athletic Council following its presentation by the Director of Athletics.
Procedure
The student-athlete under consideration will be screened by the senior staff (Director of Athletics, Deputy Director of Athletics and Associate Athletic Directors) of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the current head coach of the and forwarded to the Athletic Council through the Director of Athletics.
The retirement of a jersey must meet the following criteria:

The athlete must have earned an undergraduate degree from West Virginia University.

The athlete must have played the maximum number of years of athletic eligibility as set forth by the NCAA.

The athlete was a consensus All-American or a two-year first team All-American as chosen by an accepted or primary organization or the most valuable player of a national championship team.
-
The athlete was a individual held in high standard while on campus and has maintained a role as a solid citizen in the community.
