Baseball rumor mill!

I’m telling you, West Virginia baseball has arrived. Made a NCAA regional and threatened a top seed. Got hosed by a bad call in a big game, which is very big-time and also familiar to you and the sporting events on the biggest stages. Earned a seat on the coaching carousel.

Manager Randy Mazey’s name was thrown into the Tennessee search — the Vols found their man — and though I’m told that never went anywhere and the Mazeys are pretty clear they’re pretty happy here, it’s nevertheless an indication of the program’s strength and perception.

But now, even assistant coaches are in the mainstream during the silly season.

The thought around the team is Matlock will be a head coach eventually, and the thought here is UTRGV — that’s University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley — is the sort of job that might entice and invite him.

The Vaqueros, who play in the WAC, will have to rely on in-state players, but Texas high school baseball is enormous, and Matlock was a winning high school baseball coach in the heart of Texas before he started out in college coaching.

He worked for two seasons as a volunteer at TCU and then started zipping up gaudy recruiting classes as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at Texas State. He’s given credit for a lot of the recruiting conquests the Mountaineers have enjoyed the past few seasons, including the fun courtship of Alek Manoah.
