The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

More snaps, more impressions

More live reps — the read sends the action one way, the quarterback sends the ball the other way, and the receiver is about as far from the ball as possible, so good luck covering all of that — and if we’re being honest, there were only minor differences Tuesday. That’s fine.

We’re near the end of spring football at West Virginia, and it would seem the coaches have things figured out for now. It is by no means a finished product or close to it, but given who’s healthy and on campus, the Mountaineers narrowed their focus fairly early and went from there.

And where are they? Let’s have a look at the for-what-it’s-worth first-team offense and defense.

QB: Will Grier
RB: Justin Crawford
LT: Josh Sills
LG: Kyle Bosch
C: Matt Jones
RG: Grant Lingafelter
RT: Colton McKivitz
WR: Jovon Durante
WR: Ricky Rogers
IR: David Sills
IR: Gary Jennings

Sills and Jennings are the most interesting variables on offense. They’re built like wide receivers, and each has played there in the past, but they’re defined now as inside receivers. They’re bigger bodies, and offensive coordinator Jake Spavital likes that look for blocking and pass target purposes. Still, they’re both relatively nimble players. Sills might return punts, and he can handle screens. Jennings has returned punts been the punt returner, and on Tuesday he ran a familiar play. (Goodness, that’s an awful video. I didn’t realize I wasn’t zoomed in properly.)

But they’re both able to get open down the field and there were a few times Tuesday when both lined up on a side with three receivers. You really can’t play an honest defense with three one-on-ones and a safety above it all. (WVU definitely needs Ka’Raun White, and freshman Reggie Roberson intrigues the offensive staff, because he can fly, but do keep an eye on a pair of walk-ons: Javier Marenco and Druw Bowen, both inside receivers who the coaches say put themselves in position to play.)

And for what it’s worth, receivers coach Tyron Carrier, famously loath to issue praise, can’t get enough Jennings right now.

The offensive line still isn’t changing much. Yodny Cajuste is back at practice, and he’ll most likely be the starting left tackle. Sills is the sixth lineman then, and finding Nos. 7, 8 and maybe nine will be important, but we may see WVU pinpoint three tackles, three guards and three centers and use just seven players.

Rob Dowdy is a name we’ve heard. Tennessee transfer Ray Raulerson, a center, has seen more time lately. On Tuesday head coach Dana Holgorsen said center Jacob Buccigrossi, who tore an ACL late last month, should be cleared in August. But this is the unit that encapsulates the spring and the opening passage. WVU organized who it had on hand and went from there. But this is also a position that figures to get some help over the summer when Lackawanna’s Isaiah Hardy enrolls. He’s quite likely a guard.

DE: Reese Donahue
NG: Xavier Pegues
DE: Adam Shuler
Will: David Long
Mike: Al-Rasheed Benton
Sam: Hodari Christian
CB: Elijah Battle
CB: Hakeem Bailey
Spur: Marvin Gross
Bandit: Toyous Avery
Free: Jovanni Stewart

Adam Shuler is back from wherever he was previously when Holgorsen wouldn’t discuss him. Jeffrey Pooler was in that dog house, too, and defensive coordinator Tony Gibson slipped his name into conversation yesterday. Gibson also said Christian is behind Xavier Preston, but Christian is one of those light-came-on fifth-year players. Bailey’s closed very well in his first spring, and Battle has held his spot from start to finish, but Mike Daniels gets mentioned a lot and Syracuse transfer Corey Winfield is going to play. Junior college transfer Fontez Davis is a wild card. Avery is the bandit and Stewart may have found at free safety, but he can play all three positions now. (Aside: Stewart’s rise is, to be, the biggest no-brainer. He was way, way underrated in high school — a big high school — where he made a ton of plays.) I think safety, similar to offensive line, worked with who was on hand, will get better when Dravon Askew-Henry is cleared and will welcome some bodies over the summer. Colin Smith? Eugene Brown? Or is help already here in the form of, say, walk-on Dante Bonamico?
