Bob Huggins’ odd history with Gonzaga

West Virginia is 0-3 all-time against Gonzaga, and two of the games weren’t even funny. Bob Huggins is 1-4 against the Bulldogs and 0-4 against his friend Mark Few, and he’s had an overall worse time than the Mountaineers.

The Mike Kitts Game – which could also be known as the Chuck Machock Game – was against Gonzaga. That’s when Huggins and Machock, who is Huggins longtime friend and Cincinnati’s radio analyst, were both tossed during the defeat.

“Go and sit in one of those locker rooms for a half and see how you like it,” Huggins remembered on media day Wednesday at the SAP Center. “They don’t put a TV in there. Nothing. Our orthopedic surgeon was coming in and telling me what the score was, and then the NCAA people came in and said you can’t do that because I was sending messages back out.

“People think I’m a hell of a lot smarter than what I really am if I can do that. I couldn’t possibly do that. And cell [phone] reception in there was awful. Just horrible. And I wanted to call my mother and apologize for getting thrown out and embarrassing her. She said, ‘I can’t believe you lasted as long as you did the way they were calling things.’ ”
