Bob Huggins just wants to help

This has been an eventful season for the never static relationship between Bob Huggins and college basketball officials. He fell down once and was given a technical foul. Another time he was asked if he wanted a technical, and Huggins, never one to flinch, obliged. Still, that’s only half of his season-long total, but technical fouls are only half the story.

He was dubious before the season started about another round of officiating shifts, and he’s been puzzled by the results ever since. He’s slid in one-liners in a list of news conferences. He’s openly criticized officials but done so in disguise, never better than last month when he was perfectly clear about how mad he was/is at the officiating at the end of the loss at Kansas.

But also this season, Huggins has developed a new tactic. He wants to help, and he strongly believes officiating should be organized and operated by the NCAA.

“I think it would be a great move on the NCAA’s part to bring them in house,” Huggins said. “And I think it’d be good for them. Then they could have insurance, they could have retirement, the whole deal. I think that’s great — and then they’re working for the NCAA.”
