The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

It’s very nearly in the air

Back at Mountaineer Field, West Virginia will have its spring game on April 15. That’s a day before Easter, and that’s kind of clever. Many high schools are on spring break the week before or after the rabbit hides the eggs around your house, so that accommodates recruits in need of a campus visit. (Aside: I suspect WVU will travel for at least one practice. Doing so the past few years has been too good for the program and its fans.)

Thanks to Tyron Carrier’s tweet, we know spring football begins March 14a — two days before the start of the NCAA tournament, and possible a travel day for much of the media — and goes for five uninterrupted weeks. No one-week pause for spring break, which Dana Holgorsen has enjoyed in the past.

He had a choice, too. The final week before spring break begins Monday, and the spring semester resumes on April 14. WVU could have started Monday, taken a week off and then finished with four straight weeks, and that’s happened before. Holgorsen likes getting his players back and settled for a week and then bringing them back the break. But doing so this year puts the spring game on April 8. I think that ranks the value of the off week for acclimatization and the value of letting recruits plan around Easter.

Once more, everything is about recruiting.
