Out and in?

We know West Virginia’s new coaches are already recruiting for the future, and we know the new offensive coordinator is also going to call the plays. What was more interesting about the acquisition of Jake Spavital was not what it would do to the organization and execution of the offense or the business of Dana Holgorsen.

What would it mean for recruiting? Because Spavital is known to go after and get big-time talents.

Well, he’s already reaching into his bag of tricks. He went to the garage, blew the dust off a box and offered the scholarship inside to Adrian Martinez. It depends on what recruiting service you trust, but he’s one of the top 15 or so dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2018 class. He’s one of the best all the way out in California. He’s also committed to Cal — and to Spavital — but that’s obviously anything but definitive given the turnover there.

I find it noteworthy that Spavital returns and WVU goes after two-ability quarterbacks. I suppose Cody Saunders was one, but Will Grier and Chris Chugunov were not, and I think the passing deficiencies of Skyler Howard and William Crest gave the coaching staff something to consider.

But Martinez can fling it. He seems to make good decisions when to throw — I know some coaches like it when prep QBs pump on film, because it’s easy to manipulate prep defensive backs — and the throws are just fine. He can also run. And play basketball. He’s a 2-guard for a top team in California, and it seems all he does is rebound, guard and pass.

So there’s a name and a trend to monitor. Let’s also see what WVU does about big bodies, because it’s lost one. Mike Ferns, a fullback/tight end who was also very good on special teams, has left the team to focus on academics.

Brendan Ferns’ older brother, Mike was one of two bodies WVU trusted at the point of attack last season. It was him and Eli Wellman. It sort of extends the offense’s trouble with power personnel. It had to shift and ditch a lot of ideas without tight ends for much of last season, and this is an enormous spring coming up for Stone Wolfley and Trevon Wesco. But right now, WVU only has a bunch of walk-ons who can spell Wellman. Wellman’s Backup or Wellman’s Accomplice isn’t a huge role — Ferns played 74 snaps on offense in 2016 — but it now needs to be filled.
