Belk has contacts in bulk

Tony Dews might be new to coaching running backs, as his new and second stint at West Virginia is also the first time he’s ever coached the position, but he’s not new to recruiting. Doug Welk? That’s a different story.

Dews knows the demographics here, and he also knows the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas. It’s really not surprising that he came back east from Arizona, quickly tapped into the DMV area and booked visits from top-shelf players for the first junior day event earlier this month and has some high-level skill players coming next month.

The questions you and I had, though, were about Belk. The cornerbacks coach new to coaching and recruiting … at least in a full-time capacity. We’re weeks away from the start of spring football, but Belk, who is making calls in Georgia, is already putting his experience at Alabama to good use.

On Feb. 15, Belk extended five new offers, mostly to cornerbacks, who are all from Georgia. That included one — Alpharetta’s Jaycee Horn — that Belk had coached each of the previous two years at Alabama’s prospect camps.

“In ninth and tenth grade, I went to Alabama and he coached me up there,” said the 247Sports three-star recruit. “He taught me a lot of stuff, a lot of little things that really helped. He’s helped me develop into the [defensive back] that I am now. Every day I felt like I learned something new from him.”

Because of that relationship, Horn says a visit to Morgantown is at the top of his list now, despite holding twenty other offers from the likes of Missouri, Maryland, Tennessee and others.

Another target — Central Gwinnett’s Donte Burton — was so enthused with his new offer and the bond he’s quickly built with Belk that he will “most definitely” visit West Virginia, despite his commitment to North Carolina.

“WVU is a great program and to have the opportunity to be able to play for such a program is a blessing,” he said. “I love Big 12 football and they are heavy hitters.”
