The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

More recruiting? More recruiting!

I think it’s fair to assume this is the highlight reel Corey Winfield put together on Corey Winfield. It was published a week after Syracuse released the cornerback from his scholarship so he might go the graduate transfer route to finish his career. And please note that it starts with special teams. That’s how you speak to coaches.

West Virginia has a need for not only a cornerbacks coach — there are two names left on the list, I believe, so this could happen fast — but also for cornerbacks. Winfield, like Maurice Fleming before him, wants to play. WVU lost four senior cornerbacks and is going into the spring with Elijah Battle and a bunch of guys who have really never played. It’s no wonder the Mountaineers intentionally left a few scholarships open and at their disposal.

“We could have filled up our class if we wanted to,” WVU player personnel director Ryan Dorchester said. “But do you want to take some long-term developmental guys that, maybe, you are going to reap the benefits from four to five years down the road? Or do you want to take a guy that can come in here for a season and he might be the difference between you being an eight-win team and a 10-win team?”

The recruiting of those quick-help prospects has already begun. Later this week, the Mountaineers will host at least two graduate transfers on official visits — Syracuse cornerback Corey Winfield and Kentucky wide receiver Jeff Badet.

Winfield was first contacted by defensive coordinator Tony Gibson back in January, and has also received offers from UNLV and Purdue, two programs he visited last month. During his three years for Syracuse, Winfield registered 85 tackles, three sacks and three interceptions. He admits that the three main things he is looking for are playing time, the ability to go to a bowl game and somewhere that will help him get to the NFL. Those all are positives for the Mountaineers, who have little depth at corner, won 10 games last year and could have another high-round NFL draft pick from their secondary, one year after three were taken.

Badet has not been as open about his new “recruitment,” but he led the Wildcats in receiving last year with 670 yards on 31 catches. In his career, he has totaled 1,385 yards on 82 catches with seven touchdowns. He is also considering Oregon and a pair of WVU’s 2017 opponents, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech. Badet only has a visit to Morgantown set at this time.

Winfield’s a former receiver, but he’s started at corner in the last 20 games he’s played in, so he’s an able veteran addition. And he’s another Missouri player! Chase Behrndt is the first and only Missourian on scholarship. Who needs south Florida?

Badet is from central Florida, and he was a big loss to Kentucky offense. He led the team in receiving and was first in the SEC and sixth nationally in yards per catch. The Mountaineers lost their home run hitter when Shelton Gibson announced he was going pro, and Badet at least looks the part.
