WVU v. Kansas State: Straight shooters

You are looking live inside Bramlage Coliseum, site of today’s game between for-now No.7 West Virginia and Kansas State. The Mountaineers have to do some damage control. In addition to losing at home Wednesday to Oklahoma — and reading and hearing some red-flag stuff in the wake of that — both the Sooners and Texas Tech, the other team to beat the Mountaineers inside Big 12 play, lost today. Temple was off, but the Owls are 10-10. And the Mountaineers are down at No. 40 in the RPI.

Oklahoma went to double overtime and lost at home to Iowa State. Texas Tech lost at home to Oklahoma State. Brutal. The Sooners had a 19-point lead in the first half and looked legit. The score was 28-9 and, man, Steve Prohm’s honeymoon was over. The halftime score was 30-29. Prohm’s team was in the lead. Oklahoma led by eight in the second half and six with 100 seconds left in the first overtime and still lost.

Texas Tech I can’t figure out, unless it turns out WVU lost to two below-average teams. Oklahoma State was 0-6 in Big 12 play and had a 21-point lead in the first half. The lead was double digits — save one possession — the rest of the way, and the Red Raiders lost by 19. So Oklahoma is 2-5 in the conference and Texas Tech is 3-4 with losses to Oklahoma State and at Oklahoma.

The bottom is forming fast — Oklahoma State and Texas are 1-6, Oklahoma’s 2-5 — and WVU can keep itself out of the middle with a win today. A loss leaves the Mountaineers and Kansas State — 10-1 at home with a spirited loss to post-WVU loss Baylor — at 4-3 and even with Iowa State in the conference standings. Kansas is 7-0 now after beating Texas. Baylor is 5-1 and plays at TCU tonight, which could be interesting. The Horned Frogs are 3-3 and should give the Bears problems, and if they provide enough and win, Kansas basically has its 13th straight regular-season title.

But what about this one in the Little Apple and the Octagon of Doom?
