The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Let’s huddle: Biggest regular-season game since 13-9, right? I considered LSU at home for GameDay in 2011, home against Baylor in 2012 or at Texas a week later, but this is it. Isn’t it? And that’s a long time, no? WVU’s played teams ranked higher than No. 9 Oklahoma and it’s won, too. This just seems bigger.

Whatever your pick, be it this game or one mentioned above or not mentioned at all, is that pick bigger than 70-33?

The Sooners look like what you’d expect a Sooners team to look like. Take away a kick six, and I’m not sure Houston beats Oklahoma in the opener, which was a neutral-site game in Houston. But the Cougars had an entire offseason to prepare, and they’re quietly ordinary ever since then. That wasn’t a great day for Bob Stoops. Oklahoma’s other loss was at home to Ohio State, which happens. It got away from the Sooners, but that happens, too.

Since then, Oklahoma’s been the best team in the Big 12 and one of the best teams in the country. We just went through breathless “TEXAS IS BACK!” but we can safely say Oklahoma, with a lethal offense and a shaky defense, is back on track.

They’ve won seven straight games and outscored Big 12 opponents 336-213, and they could be playing for the conference title by the time the game begins.

Oklahoma State (8-2, 6-1) plays at TCU at noon Saturday. If the Horned Frogs win, then Oklahoma takes the Big 12 with a win over WVU. If both Oklahoma schools win, their Dec. 3 game at Oklahoma will decide the Big 12.

If the Mountaineers win Saturday as well as next week’s 3:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 game at Iowa State and the regular-season finale at home Dec. 3 against Baylor, and if Oklahoma State loses to either TCU or Oklahoma, then WVU wins the Big 12.

“That’s all positive stuff, but we’ve got to keep our nose to the ground now,” Holgorsen said. “We’ve got to worry about what we can control and worry about what our preparation is like throughout the course of the week. Every week is important. Every game is important. But give our staff and kids credit. We’ve been off the radar for a long time.”
