Plan your emergency snow route accordingly

We knew the non-conference opponents and dates in June — and we learned some more things about some games a while later — so here are just a few more notes about WVU’s basketball schedule, now that we have the Big 12 slate.

It’s kind of weird…

  • The non-conference schedule is still bland. But there are some useful gaps between games (against only so-so opposition), and that’s good because the conference season starts early this season. But WVU has some gaps in Big 12 play, too.
  • A Friday-Tuesday set on the road to start the Big 12 grind instead the customary Saturday-Monday. I think that’s OK. Certainly, it allows for more recovery and prep. WVU is on winter break, so I imagine the team will stay on the road the whole time.
  • Bob Huggins had mixed feelings about a three-game non-conference-Big 12-Big 12 arrangement last season. Said he should have come home after the Dec. 30 game at Virginia Tech and traveled Jan. 1 for the Jan. 2 and Jan. 4 games at Kansas State and TCU.
  • Kansas at home on a Tuesday. At Kansas on a Big Monday. Suboptimal.
  • Texas is the other Big Monday game. The game at Baylor is technically not Big Monday.
  • How about this? Three straight weeks of Saturday-Monday games! I’ve never seen that. Kansas State-at Kansas, Texas Tech-Texas, at TCU-at Baylor. And it’s right at the end of the schedule.
  • There are some gaps between the games on Saturday and Monday, and the team will get a day off, for sure, but that’s still three quick turnarounds in succession late in the season. Good tournament prep? Absolutely. But those back-end teams are all going to be pretty good, too. You’d much flip each of those sets, right?
  • That TCU-Baylor pairing is in the last week of the regular season, and WVU not only does the fly Friday-play Saturday-fly Saturday-play Monday-fly Monday deal, but it then plays Friday to end the regular season. The other eight teams finish on Saturday, though I guess WVU and Iowa State get an extra day of rest before the Big 12 Tournament.
