New depth chart, because why not?

I really want to urge you not invest too much into what follows. It’s a depth chart after the first week of preseason camp, and I can’t explain why WVU decided to post one online today. I’m not sure how legitimate or how accurate it is. But it’s out there, so let’s dig in, yes?

But before we begin, the previous two depth charts:

  1. July 18
  2. Aug. 2 (offense, defense, special teams)

Offensively, the only differences were Marcus Simms and Ricky Rogers swapping third-team spots at outside positions. Defensively, Kyzir White appeared on the Aug. 2 depth chart and bumped Deamonte Lindsay. At cornerback, junior college transfer Elijah Battle appeared and displaced redshirt freshman Jordan Adams. On special teams, freshman Jonn Young appeared as the backup punter and holder.

And now, today’s depth charts.

8.10 off

Zero changes on offense. Zero? Rrrright.

Look, WVU used four receivers yesterday in practice, and I sort of made a meal out of it. Jovon Durante is, by all indications, a hit at inside receiver. Nobody has been bragged about more than Justin Crawford. I don’t know how much you can trust this. It might be simply a case of WVU uploading today what we received Aug. 2.

That’s what I thought until I saw today’s defensive depth chart.

8.10 def

These are not major changes, but it’s not the Aug. 2 depth chart. Crawford and Kyeremeh flipped, and Mike Daniels appeared as a third-teamer. Toyous Avery, who I hear is on his way, is the backup free safety, which displaces Khairi Sharif, a truly Herculian feat. Maurice Fleming, who had a very good first week, is now the third-teamer at the second corner spot. (Also: Marvin Gross will not move.) But, again, who knows? There were players on the field Tuesday who befuddled me, and WVU was using a 3-1-7, which is not common. Maybe it was a ruse, and you’ll remember Tony Gibson spent the entire 2014 spring juking us with things like five defenders standing up at the line of scrimmage.

And finally, special teams, and a whopping zero changes. Jennings is without peers as a punt returner.
