A year ago, West Virginia finished 8-5 and won a bowl game, two things the Mountaineers hadn’t done in the Big 12. Head coach Dana Holgorsen was asked Tuesday if things were going as well as he’d hoped they would when the team arrived in the conference in 2012 — actually, “… have you been surprised at how difficult it’s been for you to get momentum going?” — and Holgorsen responded that things were on schedule and his team was where it needed to be.

“Two points away from winning 10, so I think we’re pretty competitive,” he said.

Hmm…

There’s an inconsistency with that. I’ll give you a some time to figure this out on your own.

Of course, the Mountaineers lost one game by one point and then four others by at least a touchdown. There is no second one-point loss and, as such, no way to justify the claim the Mountaineers were two points away from 10 wins.

Or so I thought, until I pressed Holgorsen for an explanation.

“Oklahoma State,” Holgorsen said of the 33-26 loss in overtime. “We have one more than them at the end of regulation, we don’t go to overtime. It sounds good. How’s it not true? It’s technically true.”
