Until they meet again

That’ll be an interesting reunion in Week 2 this fall, when West Virginia plays host to the Penguins and their newly acquired erstwhile four-star cornerback. Cole, of course, was a Miramar High star who didn’t survive his first semester at WVU last year.

If you’re keeping score, Cole and David Sills V are the only players from the 2015 recruiting class who aren’t with the team today.

It’s an unfortunate tale, because he’s been linked to bad news for a while now, beginning with that crazy scandal that also involved WVU’s Jovon Durante. But Cole’s story was pretty intriguing. Consider this bit upon his departure from WVU last year.

Cole, a four-star defensive back for the Patriots who signed with West Virginia in February, has not been part of the Mountaineers football program since September, a team spokesman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday. No comment was offered beyond that. Cole’s bail was $500, according to the report.

Former Miramar star Tyrek Cole was arrested Wednesday in Tallahassee on charges of battery and property damage, according to a state arrest report.

Cole was on campus in Morgantown this fall when WVU began training camp Aug. 3.

Cole faces a misdemeanor battery change in Broward County stemming from an alleged assault in Sept. 22, 2014. As a senior at Miramar, Cole was accused of beating up another student in class over seating assignments. After pleading not guilty, Cole was scheduled to enter a diversion program, but failed to meet program requirements, according to court records.

There’s a lot to absorb, but that Sept. 22, 2014 charge was one day before he was suspended by his high school and then flipped from Florida State to WVU — and feel free to interpret that so flipped from” likely means “was dropped by.” Whatever the case, he was scooped up by the Mountaineers, who of course employed former Miramar coach Damon Cogdell at the time.

But Cole continued to have problems once he joined WVU, and people were careful to point out he was separated from the team long before the arrest last year. He’s had one ambiguous incident since then, but he’s ready to rebound with Youngstown State this season.
