The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Down to one

Jonn Young and Martell  Pettaway enrolled in summer classes at WVU today. Pettaway is no doubt the more celebrated of the two players, and we had to figure he was something special right away if the Mountaineers went up to Detroit to get him and then cheered their achievement.

Then he was a stud as a senior.

That said, we’re not certain he’ll play as a freshman.

We know we’ll see Rushel Shell, and freshman Kennedy McCoy was good in the spring and Justin Crawford was the national junior college player of the year. But that’s three, and WVU knows as well as anyone you need at least that many.

Whatever the case, JaJuan Seider has to feel good knowing Pettaway is on hand.

But Jonn Young is definitely playing in the fall, and, as we speak, he probably has more guaranteed value in 2016. His resume is mighty impressive, and there’s an immediate need for him. Where? Not sure. But WVU will find a spot for him. That’s no secret.

Even the kicking game can get a boost, because Jonn Young is a useful combination of versatile and accomplished. WVU has kicker covered with Mike Molina and/or Josh Lambert, but will be using a new punter and kickoff specialist. The plan is for Young to focus on two of the three disciplines, and it seems pretty clear what those two are.

“He’s a really talented, really versatile guy,” special teams coach Mark Scott said. “We don’t want to overload him too much. At the end of spring ball here and through the summer here, we’ll take a look and evaluate everything, and we’ll try to narrow his focus down a little but, but he gives us a lot of versatility.”

Makes sense. Place kicker is covered Molina and Lambert, who you must not forget is suspended for the first three games. Billy Kinney has been around a while now, and he had the punting job to his self during the spring, but the walk-on from Morgantown’s University High is an in-game unknown. Kickoffs could fall to Molina, but Young has a leg every bit as big. He will quite likely be WVU’s punter or/and kickoff specialist in the fall.

With Pettaway and Young on campus, the only signee not yet enrolled is massive junior college All-America offensive lineman Craig Smith, who is still expected to be here next month.
