Sixth in the Big 12, first in your hearts

Athlon is in summertime mode with a series of offseason sustenance pieces — ranking the games on Georgia’s schedule, examining over-under win projections for the American Athletic Conference, 14 ACC stats you need to know, etc. — but here’s a good one to get your lips moving.

Athlon ranked all 128 coaches, from Mike Jinks to Nick Saban, because “(e)ven if a program doesn’t have the resources of the nation’s elite jobs, a good coach can elevate a program into national title contention.”

Dana Holgorsen, who Athlon previously included in a list of coaches on the proverbial hot seat, is above the middle at No. 45. He trails Bob Stoops (1), Gary Patterson (6), Bill Snyder (11), Mike Gundy (21) and Charlie Strong (32) in the Big 12 … and Strong is one spot ahead of Justin Fuente. The new Virginia Tech coach is ranked second-highest among first-year coaches. Miami’s Mark Richt is No. 16 … a spot behind Duke’s David Cutcliffe.

Now, what if I asked you to rank Nos. 7-10 in the Big 12? You’d surely say Kliff Kingsbury, Matt Campbell, David Beatty and Jim Grobe. Maybe you’d swap Beatty and Campbell. Poor Kansas: Athlon rated Rent-A-Center Grobe above Beatty and slotted Grobe at 82 overall and Beatty at 116.
