Busy weekend for Blue, WVU

A bunch of West Virginia’s coaches are vacationing, but the Mountaineers nevertheless put together a productive recruiting weekend, capped by the Sunday commitment from Eugene Brown, an aggressive safety from Georgia who was recruited by Blue Adams, the still-new assistant coach who chose his words wisely.

That’s important, not only because Adams is just a few months in, but because WVU was doing good work in Georgia with Lonnie Galloway. This gives that a chance to continue.

But that wasn’t all.

The first of the weekend’s commitments came from junior college cornerback Alex Woods, who was on campus and signed up before heading home.

“The visit went great,” Woods said. “It felt like home to me when I was about to leave and I didn’t want to leave. I loved that feeling.”

Woods hails from a familiar place for Mountaineer fans — Lackawanna (Pennsylvania) Community College, the same school that has produced former WVU players Kevin White and Mark Glowinski, as well as current Mountaineers Ka’Raun and Kyzir White.

Woods says he will return for the Oklahoma game this November, and will likely be back on an official visit a couple weeks later. He is set to graduate in December and will enroll in January with two years to play two seasons.

Let’s review here: Brown was wooed by Adams and Woods plays cornerback. Adams, the cornerbacks coach, was one of the coaches on campus this weekend, and that may pay off in the near future.

Deamonte King, a speedy Ohio defensive back, was in town and able to get familiar with the surroundings and perhaps his future.

At the same time Woods was elating the coaching staff with his commitment, Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary cornerback DeAmonte King was on the verge of doing the same. The high school athlete and track star was in town on an unofficial visit as well. It was his third visit for a WVU event this year after coming in for the Junior Day in March and the spring game at the Greenbrier.

This trip better allowed King to bond with the coaches, giving him one-on-one time with lead recruiter Ron Crook, Dana Holgorsen, and cornerbacks coach Blue Adams. King’s discussion with his potential future position coach is what stood out most to him and now has the Mountaineers in the driver’s seat.

“West Virginia is officially number one in my recruitment right now,” he said after the trip.
