Tate and see

Now, this is interesting. Tate Martell is, in pretty much everyone’s view, a top 50 player in the 2017 class, and if he’s not their No. 1 dual threat quarterback — or No. 1 quarterback — he’s not far from the top. He has offers from everyone, and he was committed to Texas A&M until recently.

Certainly, WVU will kick the tires, and it’s not exactly news to see the Mountaineers offer a top-shelf QB or for a kid, who may have some help with his Twitter, take to social media to brag about it. But there’s some beneath-the-surface stuff and a reason to at least see where this goes for Martell, the Mountaineers and Dana Holgorsen, who’d really like to sign a QB like this.

Martell is probably the best uncommitted QB in the 2017 class, and we know how important that is, and though Martell has offers from around the country, a lot of those classes have a QB or their QB already in the fold. Martell, who likes the Air Raid enough to commit to the Aggies and stay in touch with and possible stick with new Cal offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, was eager to hear from the Mountaineers.

Prior to committing to the Aggies, he said that WVU was one of several offers he really wanted that he didn’t already have, again because of Holgorsen’s offense. Within 24 hours of decommitting from Texas A&M earlier this month (rumored to be at least partially related to Spavital’s ouster this offseason), Martell claimed an offer from the Mountaineers. At this point, California (where Spavital took a job as the offensive coordinator) and Ohio State (who never stopped recruiting and visiting him) are considered the favorites, but West Virginia is at least in the picture for a summer visit now.

Let’s track WVU’s recruiting map on Twitter to see if someone is in Las Vegas in the near future.
