The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Decisions, decisions …

Who knows for sure what’s about to happen to Devin Williams? That’s not rhetorical. I’m trying to find and then talk to that person. But what we do know is we like to second-guess and project, and it doesn’t matter if it’s Daryl Worley before the NFL draft or Wendell Smallwood after it.

So now, the attention turns to Williams.

You know the background: Before the season, he talked about doing what he had to do as a junior and skipping his senior season to go pro. He was second-team all-Big 12 as a junior and made himself available for the draft beneath a highlight video set to the tune of “Ready or Not.”

It sounded like he was gone, but there remained a possibility he’d come back, because the pre-draft process allows for that. Then, out of the blue, he signed with an agent (we think!), and that ended his college eligibility … before the NBA invited players to its draft combine. Cart. Horse.

The combine invitations went out late last week, and Williams isn’t on that list or the much shorter list of alternates.

He’s not playing in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional, the pro league in Puerto Rico, and the whispers now say he’s back in Ohio working out with former Kent State/IPFW forward Demetrius Johnson, who once finished second place in Ohio’s Mr. Basketball. Can’t remember who won it that year. LeRoy James, I think. Doesn’t matter.

So, what now? The NBA’s not happening. Not in the draft. Not through free agency. Not now, at least. That target has moved, but he can still catch up in time. He’ll have to earn his money and his livelihood abroad, which seemed like the outcome from the start, and it’s up to his agent to make it happen in a way that does reward and can one day redeem Williams.
