WVU v. Kansas: Whistle noise!

You are looking live at the maestros tonight as No. 10 WVU and No. 6 Kansas try to settle first place in the Big 12, if only for the time being. As I understand things, those are three names you do not like — Sirmons and Oglesby have given Tarik Phillip technicals this season, and Higgins is an avowed defender of the rules — and you’re probably worried about home cooking and/or excessive whistles.

Well, what if I told you that they’re nowhere near among the most active officials out there?

To be accurate, we need to define “active.”

The wonderful bbstate.com says Higgins is fourth nationally in total games (66) and Sirmons is 10th (61) while Oglesby is way down the list with 51 assignments. They were all off yesterday, and Oglesby didn’t even work Sunday!

But Higgins ranks No. 179 nationally in fouls per game — games he works feature an average of 39.91 fouls. Sirmons is No. 336 (37.98) and Oglesby is No. 343 (37.94).

Ah, but that’s not your worry, right? You want to know about how officials treat the home team. Well, that news isn’t as good.

Higgins ranks No. 374 in home team foul margin (minus-2.66). Oglesby is No. 263 (minus-1.84). Sirmons is No. 240 (minus-1.69). Since I know you’re wondering, bbstate.com ranks 494 officials. Only 82 average either an even number of fouls or more fouls called on the home team.

So is it relevant? Home teams win far more often than they lose, visiting teams foul and are forced to foul more often. To many, it’s a subjective point that can be referenced when convenient.

But what about what happens here? Well, A Certain Somebody shared some research and data with me from Kansas games in Big 12 play since the 2010-11 season. It’s … well, it’s interesting. Pay heed.
