WVU v. Iowa State: Pressed for change

You are looking live at a wild Pitbull, which I’m told is that which Iowa State must be prepared for tonight.

“If people want to know what it’s like,” ISU senior Georges Niang said, “have you ever been chased by a couple wild pit bulls?

“That’s what their press really feels like.”

This is a severe change from Big 12 media day when Niang told me the Mountaineers come at opponents like bees, but it’s here and it’s what the Cyclones must counter.

Or do they?

It seemed strange during the game and then afterward that WVU continued to press and trap while Florida’s guards were turnstiling defenders and driving-and-dishing. I guess the defense for the defense was that WVU could get some turnovers, which is anything but an unrealistic demand, and rally back into the game. But I was curious if Bob Huggins might sit in straight-up man and ask Florida to, you know, run offense.

Never happened.

And here comes Iowa State, which has careful point guard Monte Morris and point forward Georges Niang, plus a few other people who can handle a press. The last thing WVU, sans Jon Holton, needs tonight is to turn Cyclones loose toward the paint, have those dribblers draw defenders from the perimeter and then have the dribbler pass outside for 3s. That pattern in this building would be disastrous, and Huggins, if nothing else, has hinted at changing playing time and tactics.

This is not to say he will or should ditch the press completely, but he might cover the break now and then, because this is a game he would really like to have in a place he’s never won.

Unfortunately, there are some players in white uniforms and a lot of people ready to cheer them on that will make this tricky.

(Disclaimer: WiFi has been awful at the last two road sites. Let’s cross our fingers here.)
