The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Holgorsen remains

So that’s that. I’m done with that, but here are a few facts:

  • There’s no significance to Jan. 1. The buyout doesn’t drop. There’s no “buyout” in the traditional sense. If Dana Holgorsen gets fired, he’s due the salary owed to him through 2017. That’s it.
  • Holgorsen was not in New York Tuesday. He was recruiting. He was in New York Monday, but not to meet with the administration. A lot of coaches and administrators from throughout college football were there for a variety of meetings. I was on a flight with Oliver Luck to New York Monday and with Pat Narduzzi from New York to Pittsburgh Wednesday. Doesn’t mean the NCAA is set to hire the Pitt coach.
  • Holgorsen is the coach for 2016, which I think means something. Obviously, there was chatter — that’s the word I’ll use; use whatever word you want — Tuesday that might not be the case, but Shane Lyons made it clear Holgorsen would coach the Mountaineers next season. That, to me, is different than saying “Dana Holgorsen is our coach.” There’s no date attached to that.
  • There’s no mention of additional years and compensation or of lesser liquidated damages. Those aren’t things that get decided over a meal, a meeting or a 24-hour period. (This is not a fact, hence the parenthesis: Could there be more to come here? Entirely possible. If Lyons wants Holgorsen and if we can assume Holgorsen wants more than two years, then there may be additional talks to find ways to make it mutually useful.)
  • Recruiting runs the world, man.
  • I’m off for a few days. Not sure how many. I’ll probably be back.
  • Oh, and basketball has a familiar problem!
