The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Comings and goings while I was gone

Big doings at the Tier 4 retreat, ones we’ll reveal later, but other things happened, too. Dustin Garrison is off to Fresno State and Andrew Buie is off to Charlotte. (That Alabama thing was too weird to acknowledge.)

Yesterday was also the first day of the second six-week summer session at WVU. And …

Look, there’s still time before the fall semester, and there’s even a three-week session that starts in three weeks. But these coaches want the absent players on hand.

To very little fanfare, Esa Ahmad is trying to get over the bar. Trevon Myers is taking online courses and told me he thought he’d be here for this session. Losing one or both, the best recruit since Devin Ebanks and/or the highest scorer in junior college last season, would be a big deal. Bob Huggins has a handful pf practices lined up before the team takes a trip to the Bahamas, where WVU will play games against pro teams from the Caribbean Aug. 10-13. I think the time to be deeply concerned is still off in the distance, but it’s getting nearer.

On the football side, Tyrek Cole was perhaps the most touted signee and fellow cornerback Rasul Douglas was a top target for an entire year. WVU’s all right at cornerback, and it’s unlikely Cole would have played (much?) this season, but Douglas is/was supposed to be game-ready. They’re not here, and neither are Jacquez Adams, Deamonte Lindsay and Xavier Pegues, and time is ticking while WVU is clear that players won’t be around of they’re questionable.

We’re anticipating having a few more guys come in on Monday. We won’t bring them in unless they’re cleared. We’ve got to have a couple more come in – I assume – on Monday and then three weeks after that we’ve got another opportunity to bring some guys in. It’s still early; too early to tell. It could be all the way until mid-August, until school starts. If guys get cleared then, then we’ll bring them in.

Now, a “few more guys” did arrive Monday, but they’re all walk-ons — and Holgorsen & Co. keep getting in-state kids.

James Whitaker – QB – 6’0 170 – Roswell H.S. (GA)
Grant Slezak – DL – 6’1 240 – Greensburg Salem H.S. (PA)

Additionally, Antonio Crawford, the cornerback transfer from Miami, should be here this week and perhaps today, but he’ll have to sit out next season.

Finally, the settlement agreement between WVU’s Board of Governors and Team Raese was released Friday, and it’s quite close to what we expected when we discussed it two weeks ago.

Exactly what the WVU Foundation, IMG College and West Virginia Media chipped in as part of the settlement — or if one, some or all of them even had to — is unknown and will remain that way since they’re private entities. Nowhere in the 11-page document will you find any sort of a reference to future business between the two.
