The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

And here come the chips

We teased this in the F Double when discussing where Kevin White and his otherworldly story might land in Thursday’s draft, and we laid out scenarios that might be out of his control. One seems to be the whims of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who, if nothing else, are good at masking their intentions. A year ago they did what had not been expected or even speculated and took Blake Bortles. They’ve long been connected to Dante Fowler this year — and I mean, strongly connected to the University of Florida prospect.

Well, Friday was a long time ago, so April 8 is something like an eternity ago when it comes time to belly up to the draft, and a lot changes. I spoke to Someone over the weekend who wondered about the authenticity of dark smoke signals coming from the Jags camp and who did not want to take it so seriously. The thought on that end of the call was Jacksonville could double down on Bortles with a receiver. Ooooh!

The Jags roster being what it is, a trade seemed likely and the team would draft a receiver wherever it landed — say, Bortles’ UCF teammate, Breshad Perriman — and then address other needs with the additional picks. Simple stuff.

But what does that do to White? Is someone trading up to get him at No. 3? Unlikely, though we’ll never say never, and who are we to doubt that White could come this far and match Dick Leftridge as WVU’s highest draft pick? Still, let’s assume this presumed trade turns into Fowler or Leonard Williams at No. 3. White could go No. 4 to Oakland, but that seems like a more likely landing spot for Amari Cooper, White’s adamance notwithstanding.

Someone could still jump up to get White, because though there are a wealth of receivers in the first round, the drop from Cooper/White to, say, Devonte Parker/Perriman, is not insignificant. But if not, White might wait until the Bears pick at No. 7 — and that outcome, in Chicago, feels like the most appropriate outcome for this story — or wait until No. 11, when Minnesota has a need to pair someone with Teddy Bridgewater … who threw college passes to Parker.

You get the point here. A lot can happen that White cannot control.

And that’s not necessarily bad. I was re-tracing some stuff on the White feature we’re rolling out Thursday and spoke to someone under the umbrella. That person was talking about the Jags, but said the word was the Jags would take a receiver at No. 3 — and that seems consistent for a front office that juked the consensus and took Bortles so high last season.

That receiver was said to be Cooper, which seems to be the Jacksonville story going around (again?) today. If that happens, then White’s a Raider, or at least gone at No. 4 if Oakland is lukewarm on White and remains willing to trade to someone who doesn’t want to wait for their pick or for someone to trade up to open-for-business Washington at No. 5.

This is going to be fun, and I welcome your predictions and theories.

As for what’s happening here, it’s simple. We’re going to run the Outtakes post tomorrow with all the quotes and anecdotes that didn’t make the White feature, plus a wealth of pictures and video that fit best here.

I’m gone Thursday as I head to Charleston to prepare for the draft party at Recovery, which you should really attend. It’s 6-8 p.m. with food and drink specials, and we’ve got guests: Doc Holliday, Robert Alexander, Quincy Wilson and others. I’ll devote the space here early in the day to the opus on White and his journey. Later in the day, I’ll link to the live stream of our draft night event.
