The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Season-opening depth chart

Take this for what you will, assuming you’re likely going to spend more time on it than the coaches did and that you might attach much more permanence, too.

QB: Clint Trickett, Paul Millard, William Crest or Skyler Howard
RB: Dreamius Smith, Wendell Smallwood, Rushel Shell, Dustin Garrison, Andrew Buie
H-Back: Cody Clay, Eli Wellman
LT: Adam Pankey, Mike Calicchio
LG: Quinton Spain, Grant Lingafelter
C:  Tyler Orlosky, Tony Matteo
RG: Mark Glowinski, Stone Underwood
RT: Marquis Lucas, Marcel Lazard
WR (X): Mario Alford, Devonte Mathis
WR (Z): Kevin White, Vernon Davis, K.J. Myers
IR (Y): Jordan Thompson, Logan Moore
IR (H): Daikiel Shorts, Garrett Hope

Observations:

– Good for Logan Moore. Kid gets pushed around here, but as a quarterback and not as an athlete. There really isn’t much use denying the latter, and he got that spot on his own.

– Good sign for the line: The only real development from camp was redshirting junior college tackle Sly Townes, mostly because WVU didn’t need him this season. He wasn’t going to start and he wasn’t going to be better than Calicchio or Lazard. You have to have that stability if you’re going to be good up front. I can’t tell you WVU will be good up front, but WVU has given itself just about every chance up to this point.

– Personally, I wonder about Howard’s future.

– Slot receiver…oh, boy. I think Shorts will be fine, and that’s about it. Hope is not a receiver. He’s there to block in the slot, but that mitigates what that position can do. Thompson has been very good in camp, but we’ve played that song before. And niceties about Moore aside, he’s never done anything there in a game. The Thompson/Moore stuff is worth noting because the Y position is pretty much the most important part of Dana Holgorsen’s offense. Then again, WVU has wanted Thompson to be Tavon’s heir for quite some time. I just see those names and think Clay and Smallwood have to be big parts of what happens inside.

– Any time now, Shelton Gibson.

DE: Shaq Riddick or Noble Nwachukwu
NT: Kyle Rose, Christian Brown
DE: Dontrill Hyman, Eric Kinsey
Spur: K.J. Dillon, Cullen Christian
Sam: Wes Tonkery, Isaiah Bruce
Mike: Nick Kwiatkoski, Al-Rasheed Benton
Will: Brandon Golson, Edward Muldrow
Left CB: Terrell Chestnut, Travis Bell
FS: Dravon Henry, Jeremy Tyler
BS: Karl Joseph, Jarrod Harper
Right CB: Daryl Worley, Ricky Rumph

Observations:

– I guess I’m alone, but I never really thought Brown was going to be a defensive end, or maybe that he should be. Rose is OK in the middle, but there really had been nothing behind him — Darrien Howard is not where he needs to be, which, again, isn’t all his fault — so taking from a position of greater depth (defensive end) to help nose seemed plausible, if not eventual. Rose and Brown can and probably will play end either in some situations or against some teams, but it just feels like having Brown in the middle is and was the way to go.

– Christian must have closed strong. It was all Dillon and Dayron Wilson the last few times we were around the team. I think if we’re being honest, you feel safer for now with a guy like Christian, who is a natural defensive back with cover skills, than you do Wilson, who is a converted linebacker.

– Wes. Tonkery. Whew. What a push. What a story.

– Muldrow was a Sam early on, and I think until late in camp. Is he most like Golson? Probably, which then explains the move. He’s an off-the-edge guy, and since Tony Gibson said something would have to be wrong if he didn’t have Golson and Muldrow on the field to rush the passer on third downs, I suppose one just moves to the other side for that particular play.

– Oh, Isaiah Bruce. There was a time he was the most athletic player among the linebackers and the resident “explosive blitzer.” That time has passed, which says a few things about Bruce and a few things about his surroundings. He didn’t completely fall off, and guys like Muldrow, Golson, Al-Rasheed Benton and probably even Tonkery are just as agile, if not more. That’s not a bad thing for that group. But Bruce has also been shuttled around for two years now and that doesn’t, or seemingly shouldn’t, happen to a fixture or a force or whatever it looked like Bruce was going to be in 2012. Big year for him.

– I make nothing out of the “Chestnut, Bell” order, except I’m surprised it didn’t come with “or.”  One will start, one will finish and both will play. The real intrigue there isn’t even included: How fast is Jaylon Myers moving behind them?

K: Josh Lambert, Michael Molinari
P: Nick O’Toole, Molinari
LS: John DePalma, Nick Meadows
H: Molinari
KO: Molinari
PR: Thompson, Mario Alford
KR: Alford, Shell, Smallwood, Worley

Observations:

– Just one: Molinari can’t get hurt. He can’t. No more chest bumps. No ice skating. Wear shower shoes. Let an expert clip your toe nails. Take the elevator, not the stairs. Watch yourself, kid. You’re the most indispensable player on the roster.
