The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

This story is actually about Staten

It is, I promise, but this begins with an odd anecdote.

Bob Huggins was doing his part on the Big 12 summer teleconference last week when someone asked him if Billydee Williams’ name ever came up among the coaches or players during the recruiting process. My hand to God, that happened.

Huggins, who, if I’m being honest, sounded pained and groggy, was not out completely out of it.

“I think the younger generation doesn’t have any idea of who Billy Dee Williams is,” Huggins said of the star of films and commercials and not of his newest player. “I just hope he’s good enough that he’s going to make people remember him.”

Then the Staten stuff started happening. Remember, Staten has been Huggins’ brown paper bag this offseason, the elixir for the fan’s anxiety. Players were leaving and, yeah, they’d be replaced by new players who haven’t seen this level, but “we’ve got probably the leader for the Big 12 player of the year coming back who’s going to have the ball in his hands. I don’t think another team can say that.”

That’s a point. I don’ t know how sharp or strong it is, but it’s a point. And I guess if you’re going to have someone as dedicated and as skilled as Staten, he might as well be the point guard, right?

So that’s a boon for Huggins, who can trust Staten to organize away from the coach and then conduct when the time arrives during the season, a season that, again, will feature more new people than returning players.

Huggins then tilted the rear view mirror and foreshadowed just a little bit as he spoke of the Cincinnati team that followed the Final Four.

“We had three guys who were good and wanted to do what needed to be done,” Huggins said. “We were able to convey that to a bunch of the incoming guys that were very talented and we got better and better and better as the season went on.

“I see this team being able to do that think. I think they’ll get better and better as the thing goes on. I think we have to have the same kind of selfless attitude that I think the really good teams have. I don’t have any indication at this point in time that that’s not going to happen.”
