WVU v. Texas Tech: Your mission, should you choose

So say the stickers for the guests to the athletic director’s suite. It would behoove West Virginia to heed the advice. The schedule is just brutal after this and a loss tonight might bring the Mountaineers home Feb. 1 looking to not match the longest losing streak of Bob Huggins’ career.

Oklahoma State looks to become the 15th straight ranked opponent to beat WVU when the Cowboys play host to the Mountaineers Saturday. It’s too risky to say Baylor will be ranked Tuesday, but the Bears are now and play host to red-hot Texas Saturday.

The next home game would be against Kansas State. That Kansas State. And also this Kansas State:

Four days later, it’s Oklahoma, only the highest-scoring team in the Big 12. Whatever the outcomes of those games, WVU would still have two games left against Kansas and Iowa State.

Good news, though. Chase Connor was getting shots up 100 minutes before the game.

Let’s get a few of ours in early, too.

There’s been a lot of talk about Devin Williams of late and how he’s been something of the team’s omen of fortune. When he’s good, WVU is usually good. When he’s bad, the Mountaineers have no one and nothing of significance inside.

This is a game he has to be good.

Texas Tech has outrebounded the opponent 13 times in 18 games and 11 of the past 13. The margin has been plus-10 or better seven times. Nobody in the Big 12 gives up fewer rebounds per game.

Add to that this, which we’ve already been over: Texas Tech has scored 667 of its 1,321 points in the paint — or 37.1 points per game. The Red Raiders have scored at least 22 in the paint in every game.  WVU averages 26.4 points in the paint. In their eight losses, the Mountaineers have been outscored by more than eight points on average and only outscore the other team by a little more than two points per game in their wins. Opponents get 41 percent of their points inside.

So, yes, you-know-who is a key. And do you know who else knows? The Daily Athenaeum, of course.

The student section has T-shirts, as well. Again. I hate to repeat myself, but T-shirts are not cool. They’re not cheap, either. What they are, I’ve always thought, are superficial rewards for people who come to the games. If that’s why you’re coming to the arena …
