WVU v. Mount St. Mary’s: Mountaineers will win

The season-opener starts here shortly and it’s West Virginia’s Mountaineers against Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers. That won’t be confusing at all. The MSMountaineers were 18-14 last season, but won nine of their last 11 games and lost to LIU-Brooklyn in the championship game of the NEC tournament.

They press and run and let it rip from deep, so buckle up tonight.

Quick pre-game notes: No Terry Henderson. His shins are still inflamed. Someone will have to pick up the perimeter shooting and the chatter points to Juwan Staten. He’s missed his last 18 from beyond the 3-point line and hasn’t made one since Feb. 16, 2011, but all we hear is that he’s taking and making them in practice.

Not sure what to make of this as far as omens go, but the women’s team lost the first game here tonight, 70-61, against Ohio State. The Mountaineers outrebounded Ohio State 53-36, had 32 points in the paint, 17 second-chance points and 10 fast break points … but shot just 30.9 percent and missed 11 of 28 free-throw attempts.

Oh, and Mike Carey’s squad shot a tidy 2-for-20 from deep. The makes are out there for someone, so why not Wanny?

Let’s blog.
