I think Keith Patterson is doing this on purpose, and if he isn’t, I beg him to keep forgetting to put away his toys.

Last week when I walked into the room that holds the press conference, I saw his big board that tracks the 10 metrics he uses to measure his defense’s success.

Today, there was an enormous board that tracks what the defensive players do on defense, and I think special teams: Total plays, assists, tackles, tackles for a loss, quarterback hits, sacks, big hits, “exceptional” plays, “extra mile” plays, forced fumbles, recovered fumbles, pass break-ups, caused interceptions, interceptions, defensive scores, critical errors, missed tackles, loafs, missed assignments and penalties.

Points are awarded and deducted for the various plays with the really good ones getting more points and the really bad ones losing more points. Every player ends up with a point total and a percent grade. Neat to see.

Well, through three games, what if I told you this defense has 14 missed tackles, six critical errors and just 60 missed assignments? I say “just” because it’s a young team that’s had to scrambled a lot already this season — consider this: Marvin Gross played a lot at Oklahoma and didn’t play at all against Georgia State — and also because 11 players multiplied by 187 defensive snaps equals a hell of a lot more than 60.
