We discussed yesterday that the Mountaineers are using the treymond with more regularity and, of course, more success. Well, Oklahoma is turning back the clock, further back. The Sooners, once synonymous with the wishbone, are doing some zone read stuff with redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Knight. Oklahoma sought some expertise in the offseason.

Ault, who stepped down at Nevada in December, visited Norman for two days during the spring, primarily spending time with Stoops and co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel.

“The exchange with their coaches over the two days and watching spring football and stuff, I was really impressed with what they had already installed from the pistol and whatever they were going to take away from our conversation,” Ault told The Oklahoman. “It was a lot of fun. To me, it was a two-day coaching clinic. I enjoyed being with those guys and glad to hear they’ve adopted a little bit of it.”

Stoops said before the season the offense wouldn’t look much different from what the Sooners ran with Landry Jones behind center, but the option with the increased use of the pistol is nothing like anything OU has used since Stoops took over.

“When I said it’s not gonna look much different, all our passing game, all the other stuff is all the same,” Stoops said. “That’s one wrinkle that was different.

“It’s a significant wrinkle.”

Can’t stress this enough, but it’s a big, big day for WVU’s linebackers.

Some other observations from being around here early today.

* It’s hot. Get used to that topic, but 93 degrees at kickoff is 93 degrees. A comment I made and I’ve heard others either make or agree with is that it’s hard to breathe in the heat.

* Paul Millard v. Trey Millard. It’s Paul Mill-LARD and Trey MILL-lerd. This could be problematic since Charles Davis couldn’t stop calling your Millard MILL-erd last year.

* It might be that it’s vast and just very flat around here and that I can see forever, or that it’s pushing 100 degrees and thus much cooler inside bars or homes, but there aren’t a lot of people out around the stadium at 3:30 EST.

I do like this set up, though. That television is bigger than the point spread. Hey-o!

* This is the best.

* Note how the school refers to itself there. But check out this water tower, or any other emblem with the school letter …

Bass ackwards, right? Right! And totally acceptable here.

* Sometimes when you’re driving in from out of town trying, it can be a struggle to find the destination — and a GPS isn’t always reliable. You look for lights or a large clearance or something to let you know there’s a football stadium somewhere. And it’s not always easy.

Absolutely not the case here. I could see this from Meridian. And on the opposite side of this is the enormous scoreboard.

* WVU has Charles Sims and I’ve read and heard nothing but respect from the Sooners coaches and players. Yet they’re fine having their Sims, thank you very much.

* And finally, I mentioned it’s a big day for the linebackers, and it is, but whither your linebackers coach who happens to also be the defensive end?
