The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

A late Sunday night depth chart

So this happened at 8:32 last night with about 28 minutes to go before deadline, which isn’t entirely unbefitting for the conversation we had last week.

The whole thing begins after the jump and is followed by thoughts I let loose on Twitter last night since I didn’t have the time or space to jam them into a story.

OK, first things first. In most instances, I would have formatted this different for the blog and excluded the “games played” and “games started” stats from this list because they’re clunky. I included them because, wow, there are a lot of zeros.

* Ford Childress is your third string quarterback and Andrew Buie is your fifth-string running back. Here come the rumors.

* This came from the F Double.

While I think Trickett is the pick because he’s been in there more than the others and Holgorsen obviously values leadership and presence, I heard what you’d consider encouraging things about Millard at the end of camp. Was it enough? We’ll see.”

Uh, apparently it was just enough. What I’ve heard, as opposed to what I’ve seen, is that Millard has reigned himself in and played smarter football.

* Charles Sims: Good enough to walk onto campus and win the running back job in a competition that was good enough to relegate last season’s leading rusher to fifth string and also good enough to win the kickoff returner job even though he’s never returned a kickoff in college.

* Ivan McCartney! I’m guessing Kevin White is still slowed a little by whatever is slowing him, and that’s not good news. It’s curious to me, as well, that he and K.J. Myers play the Z position. That likely means they’re most comfortable there and there isn’t a lot of interest in moving White.

* I had not heard the name Marvin Gross of late. Yet there’s the 6-foot-2, 195-pound true freshman right behind Isaiah Bruce, the new starter at Spur linebacker.

* Darryl Worley is a backup cornerback and, again, don’t be surprised if he plays a lot, or, at the worst, if he’s a factor pass defense packages or near the goal line. He and Gross are the only true freshmen listed on the defensive depth chart. WVU played eight true freshmen on defense last season.

* When I did the All-Camp team a week ago, I went back and forth on Marcell Lazard, but I honestly backed away because 1) I hadn’t seen a lot of him and 2) despite strong reviews, he’s a true freshman trying to get a spot on the offensive line. Well, he’s the backup right tackle. And I maintain Pat Kindler and Nick Eger are going to be cogs if this line is going to be good.

* How about this? Seven starters and eight second-team players on the offensive depth chart didn’t play in the Pinstripe Bowl. Seriously, lots of new people on this team.

* Three cheers for Jordan Thompson! True, the coaches omitted a second inside receiver position from the depth chart — and that ought to give you an idea of the so-called five best on offense — but Thompson is listed as a backup punt returner. That he’s listed at all and acknowledged for something is a win for him.

* I’m not sure you need or want to take the depth chart that seriously. It’s going to change by Saturday.
